There is. Long term semi protection really only hits a very small
number of subjects. The number of subjects that enough people feel
strong about to cause a problem is unlikely to increase.
I don't know that I agree with that last sentence. What subjects are
there, which are contentious in real life, which don't already have WP
pages, and are encyclopedic? What subjects we have WP articles on
which are contentious in real life aren't contentious in WP, and why?

You might be right, but it doesn't strike me as obviously so. I think
a lot of the problems which are likely to hit, have already hit. Many
may stay poorly resolved for a while, but they're already here, I
think.
