While I knew that Digital Universe were planning an encyclopedia, I hadn't come
across many details, so I thought I'd forward these links. Please hit me an the
head and give me a pointer to where this has been discussed ad nauseum
previously!

As part of their "Earth Portal", DU are planning an "Encyclopedia of Earth":

They plan to use two wikis; a Public wiki and a "Steward" wiki. The Public wiki
will be editable by the public, but the Steward wiki will only be editable by
approved experts.

They're considering free licensing, there'll be overarching editorial decisions
which apply to every article, no anonymous authorship, and the articles will be
organised within a logical taxonomy developed by experts.
