I don't think stability can come about through the stalemate of equal
force. As soon as one of the forces wavers, the whole thing will come
apart like a house of cards.

There has to be give and take. Each side has to feel understood by the
other. And they have to AGREE to disagree - or to share - or whatever. 

No agreement, no stability.
