[Mediawiki-l] Duration of Wikipedia upgrade - why so long?

This is a technical question... the Wikipedia upgrade appears to have been
going on for around 9 hours at this point.  So that I can factor this into
my wiki maintenance plan, what's taken so long?  Was there a database schema
change or other database transformation?   Is it the sheer size of the
database dumps?  Were there unforeseen problems?  Is it the distributed
configuration of Wikipedia?

Would love to know...
