I do remember once downloading a 3-D gopher client in
1995, where you
could view the gopher world in three dimensions. I think it was called
"GopherVR".
TurboGopher 3D for the Macintosh.
However, a WAP interface to the Wikipedia---I could
definitely see
using that.
At least here in Europe WAP is dying. Major companies don't offer WAP
content any longer. It is replaced by HTML pages. Mobile phone's
displays get bigger and more colorful and are not longer handicapped by
slow GSM connections, HSCSD and GPRS is here, UMTS and WLAN are coming
soon. PDAs and Cellulars are interwoven.
In addition I can't think of reading
<http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%fcchenschelle> on a WAP display with 4
lines by 20 chars of text.
I think the Wiki project will gain more through accessible and
structured HTML. This is the future.
