Hi,
some time ago I asked whether we should start using the MediaWiki namespace for
bars of links that recur on several articles; take, for example, the list of
links at the bottom of each Greek letter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta).
As far as I remember, it was said that the problem would be that we would get a
large number of self-links.
My suggestion to solve that problem was to have automatically change
blahblah to blahblah when it is inserted into the page "blahblah".
I have attempted to code this, and I came up with the following. This patch has
the side-effect of changing all self-links to bold text, even when they're not
inserted using .
I've tested this on "normal" self-links, and it appears to be working fine. I
can't test it with stuff inserted with because the MediaWiki stuff
doesn't seem to work for me (see Message-ID: <bverjf$meb$1(a)sea.gmane.org> -
any help appreciated :/).
Thanks,
Timwi

Hi,
If you look at Wikipedia:Deletion log you're likely to see some
instances of pages being "deleted" multiple times (even though they
were never recreated). ie 2 different sysops deleting the same page
at roughly the same time, and both "succeed".
Some weird timing error or something?

I'm taking a look at the new machines and starting some tests... it may
be a while before we figure out what do to with this much power! :D
Jimmy: I notice the Opteron box has 3 SCSI drives attached. sda is the
system drive, then there are sdb and sdc... all are 30 GB, but only sda
seems to be partitioned. Is this as it should be, or was there supposed
to be a RAID setup? I don't remember...

Bouncing spam with a reply actually multiplies the spam.
We're better off "discarding" the message and "filtering" the sender.
That's what I'm gonna do on Wikien-l.
I deleted around 50 spams today. Is there I way to do this
automatically? I don't want a "hold for moderator" -- just delete each
unsubscribed message quietly and automatically.

Brion,
Can we install Spam Assassin software on the wikien-l mailing list? How
about other mailing lists?
Anthere and I have gotten tired of reading and deleting up to 30 daily
spam, spam, spam, ham, eggs and spam (hasn't got MUCH spam in it) every
day -- the joke gets old after a while.

Sorry for the massive crossposting, but this is big good news.
The new colocation facility (Neutelligent/Hostway, Tampa) just called
me and they are at this moment taking delivery of 9 new servers
belonging to the Wikimedia Foundation. :-)
I'm heading over there now with Michael and we will be spending as
long as it takes to install them.
It's more up to Brion and the other developers as to when we'll be
able to go live on these. I'm just going to get them up and running
and make sure that the latest (most secure) ssh is on them.
Since I'm on my way out the door and need a quick list of names

Does the MediaWiki software simply store every old version (1, 2, 3,
...) side by side in the "old" database table, or is there some "diff"
involved in the stored format (like RCS does)?
Did any of this change between Phase II and Phase III?
Was it a non-issue or was there any (documented) design decision or
discussion of this?

Gabriel and I have been testing the squid code; we've got Larousse set
up as a squid serving the test wiki at: http://larousse.wikimedia.org/
(Yes, with a "media")
Seems to be more or less working; we may set it up for en.wikipedia.org
soon if things seem well.

Hello everyone --
This year, O'Reilly will be presenting the Open Source Convention here
is Portland, Oregon. Since travelling to it is a negligible task
(it's in downtown, & I usually commute further to work than there), I've
been considering making a presentation about Wikipedia at this year's
convention.
However, I can think of about a dozen people who know far more about
the goings-on at Wikipedia than me (e.g., Brion, Magnus, Mav, Ed Poor --
practically everyone on this mailling list), & I wanted to make sure that
1. No one is planning on making a similar presentation;
2. No one minds that I attempt to give what O'Reilly calls a "Session
Presentation" (it's a 90 minute talk) on Wikipedia.
Obviously, I'm not very familiar with the technical side of Wikipedia --
although the challenge of keeping one of the largest Wikiwiki sites up
& running is something that any talk needs to address. My intended emphasis
for this talk would be more on the social side -- as well as addressing
the perennial question, ``Can a distributed group of people write a
useable encyclopedia?" (FWIW, my honest answer to that question is yes.)
Just to be up front, I could receive an honorium for this presentation
(besides free admission to the conference), & as an unemployed contributor
I'll admit I could use the money, but I was planning on giving part of
the money to the Wikipedia Foundation.
More information about making presentations at OSCON is available at

Hello,
I'm trying to use the MediaWiki namespace on my new installation of
MediaWiki.
Unfortunately, is being replaced by nothing (i.e. it is
just being removed) even though MediaWiki:Blah does contain text.
What might the cause of this be?
Thanks again for any help,
Timwi
