I'm familiar with the idea, but I think that the reasing is incorrect.
IIRC (since I can't easily find my reference) it had something to do
with the Zen dilike of anything that is perfectly symmetrical.
And most importantly
the board is not conceived as being divided into squares but hashed with
lines: markers are placed at the intersections of these lines. Territory
consists not of "area" but of the count of /points/ cordoned off by the
markers of one color.
