Hi,
As mentioned in my previous e-mail, I was going to make the first
letter of language names lowercase where this is usual (like Français
-> français) to make it consistent with CLDR. This was also to make it
possible to prefer MediaWiki names over CLDR names, so autonyms always
use the MediaWiki name (it also makes the output of {{#language:xyz}}
and {{#language:xyz|xyz}} consistent).
While it is ultimately best to provide corrections to CLDR as well,
this takes a lot of time and it is better if they're already in
MediaWiki. For example, with this change, 'mapudungun' will always be
shown, instead of 'araucano'.

name of your language is also written with lowercase first letter,
I'll change it in a later update.

You are invited to a bug triage on Meta and mediawiki.org translation
tools hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation Localisation team. This will
be a one hour meeting. The intended audience is very broad:
translators, translation administrators, and developers. We will
discuss the current state of translation tools on Meta-Wiki and
mediawiki.org, and with your input we will try to map out which
features and issues will be most helpful to streamline the translation
process for things like documentation, policies, sitenotices,
fundraiser messaging and appeals, and other non-"primary project
content"* material that benefits from being available in as many
languages as possible.
Please forward this e-mail to anyone who may be interested. They are
most welcome to join in.
* Translating main namespace articles for Wikipedia and other projects
is still out of scope for now.

Hello,
I am one of the Google Summer of Code students and I will be working
on improving language support in MediaWiki (in particular with regards
to language names) and improving the usability of Wikimedia Incubator
(following my previous work on the Incubator-specific extension).

My first work will be the MediaWiki core part, for language names. I
will implement a language names cache (likely CDB) and I will make
English language names available in MediaWiki by default (as I once
proposed on wikitech), similar to the list currently in the Babel
extension (which would then be no longer needed). This would avoid
duplication and make language names consistent.
The biggest inconsistency currently is a difference between using
{{#language:xyz}} and {{#language:xyz|xyz}}, which both give native
names, but the first one only uses MediaWiki names and the second one
also additional data like CLDR. See

difference.
To make them consistent, I want to make our MediaWiki language names
(in Names.php) lowercase where this is usual (like: Français ->
français). I don't mind if it is displayed lowercase, but maybe others
do (for example in the interwiki sidebar). Plus, it might cause
problems for pages/templates using {{#language}} that depend on this
difference between MediaWiki and CLDR names.
Any idea, comment or feedback is welcome :)

I was able to deploy TranslationNotifications [1] to
test.wikipedia.org. The good news is that it works nicely there. The
bad news is that it's not yet on mediawiki.org or meta as planned.

Tehnical details for those who are interested:
* I added TranslationNotifications to 1.20wmf2 branch
* git pull on fenari failed due to file permission issues
** Reedy asked ops to fix it and they did
** I asked what should be done to prevent this issue from reappearing
- got no answer but I set my umask to 0002 manually.
* Documentation for updating make-wmf-branch code was out of date
(repo was moved to git).
** Submitted patch to git and updated the documentation on wikitech wiki. [2]
* I did the necessary configurations needed for a new extension and
enabled TranslationNotifications on test.wikipedia.org
** But test.wikipedia.org was still running on branch 1.20wmf1. Reedy
updated it to 1.20wmf2 when I asked why it was like that.
** I was told that scap is broken and since scap is the easiest way to
deploy new extension so that l10n cache gets updated, I decided not to
deploy beyond testwiki.
* While testing on test.wikipedia.org, noticed one small usability
issue. Siebrand provided a fix for it.
* https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/5783 is still waiting for review. We
(l10n-team) decided earlier that digest email feature is not a blocker
for deployment today.

Hey all.
If you haven't come across me before, I'm Harry (better known in many
quarters by my pseudonym Jarry1250) and I was recently awarded a place on
this year's Google Summer of Code to work on a project called TranslateSvg.
Hello :)
In a nutshell, TranslateSvg is all about providing an interface that allows
Wikimedia Commons users to translate SVG images on the spot and without
fuss.
As part of that remit, I'm now seeking out those among the community who
have direct experience of translation of one sort or another and who might
like to help influence the design of TranslateSvg (both in terms of
interface design and workflow requirements).
Particularly super-useful would be to someone willing to try out interface
designs in the RTL variants, or using non-Latin scripts.
Thanks and much respect for all the hard translation/i18n work that goes on
to make MediaWiki a world class piece of software.
