Apropos of the thumbnailing issue, it might actually be a huge advantage to
be able to crop and zoom.
Consider the case where we have a historical photograph showing several
notable people. We have the option of simply showing the same image against
each of those people, or uploading multiple cropped fragments showing each
person in turn.
Imagine the possibilities of uploading a single image showing all those
people and then being able to show just the appropriate face in the article,
linking through to the main image for context.
