Over the last 2 days or so, there seems to have been a
huge increase
in the number of broken thumbnails on the Commons, especially PNG and
GIFs.

The CAPTCHAS not showing up are a bit of a concern,
especially since
it's hard to collect information about what happened.

also a couple of days ago I noticed an anon user inserting a URL with
big spaces in it to avoid the CAPTCHA and they commented they couldn't
see the CAPTCHA (it was a legitimate URL).
I'll check this out. There's a few obvious things I can check, which may or may
not help.
