I'm not sure why it's such a big deal to have
separate Traditional and
Simplified versions of pages on Commons. Unlike most other projects,
language is obviously not a main concern of the project, that's why it
combines so many languages in one site.
It is vital for the Help and Commons namespace pages though. And
Commons:Licensing.
With Commons, on the other hand, the only sorts of
material that need
to be translated are things like documentation, a relatively small
volume, so the effort to convert by hand is not misplaced -- why not
have a better-quality product when it takes only slightly more effort?
I feel an up-to-date effort is the best thing we can offer our users.
Do you volunteer to keep traditional translations up to date then? We
are currently missing traditional translations for these pages:
Commons:欢迎 Welcome
Commons:社区主页 Community portal
Commons:常见问题解答 FAQ
Commons:联系我们 Contact us (actually this page is very incomplete)
Commons:Privacy policy (no Chinese at all)
Commons:收录标准 Project scope
Commons:删除指导方针 Deletion guidelines (this is incomplete and likely out
of date anyway)
Commons:版权标签 Copyright tags
Commons:Media help (no Chinese at all)
Commons:File types (no Chinese at all)
Commons:Help page maintenance/Wikimedia Commons interface (strings
listed on this page, not this page itself)
Template:No source since (no Chinese at all)
Template:Idw/zh-hans
Template:Welcome/zh (note that this is seriously out of date, and
since we are now posting automatic welcomes to all active new
accounts, I think it would be nice to have an up to date translation)
These are just some of the more important ones. I don't really mind if
we don't have the autoconverter, I'd just like to be clear about what
we DO have.
Maybe you can offer some advice about the zh/zh-tw/zh-cn/zh-sg/zg-hk
vs zh-hans/zh-hans issue?
cheers,
Brianna
