OK. I just tried in Safari and it worked. So it must be something
about my Firefox install, not my server. I'm using 1.5b2

This is frustrating because I did a fresh install of the software. I
made one minor change to the Monobook skin (to use a wiki page for the
navigation) and thats it. I even tried reverting back to the original
skin and that didn't help. The only other change is a .htaccess file
to redirect urls without the /wiki/ path that I now use, but disabling
the .htaccess doesn't help either. (And yes, I did a purge command
after each of these changes, as well as emptying my Firefox cache,
just to be sure.)

If your hosting provider is using a server farm with multiple hosts, the
default PHP session configuration may be storing data on a local drive
which breaks things.
Try checking the directions for running on Sourceforge, which has a
similar issue:

Just making a directory isn't enough; you'll have to configure it, as
described there.
