I get the same behaviour as if TeX was turned off

Have you checked
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Problems_with_texvc ?
I didn't know that page existed, but now I've checked it and I didn't
really find it particularly helpful. I've installed all the things it
mentions.
I've tried running texvc on the command line:
/c/wp/wiki> math/texvc
'/c/wp/wiki/images/tmp' '/c/wp/wiki/images/math'
'1+1=2' 'ISO-8859-1'
C0cfae383362bc63d7ac429a5755fef051 + 1 =
2<mn>1</mn><mo>+</mo><mn>1</mn><mo>=</mo><mn>2</mn>-
It creates latex files in images/tmp but not the png files in images/math.
Any more ideas?
Comment out the Sys.remove's (by (* comment *) ) in render.ml, recompile,
and check exactly when it breaks.
Are .dvi created ? What about .ps ?
The fragment to comment out:
let unlink_all () =
begin
(*
Sys.remove (tmpprefix ^ ".dvi");
Sys.remove (tmpprefix ^ ".aux");
Sys.remove (tmpprefix ^ ".log");
Sys.remove (tmpprefix ^ ".tex");
Sys.remove (tmpprefix ^ ".ps");
*)
