You can run texcnv from the command line. It is called like this from the
source of the math plugin:
./math/texcv tmpdir mathdir mathexpression encoding
Like:
math/texcv /tmp /tmp "sqrt(x)" utf-8
You might need to adjust the quoting for your shell if you are not using
bash.
If you do not have math/texcv yet, you need to make it like:
cd math
make
(On my system I get an error, indicating that ocaml is not yet installed)
