I was comparing the category method (which requires frequent hits to
the database) to what basically amounted to a user-maintained list. I
think it's pretty obvious that the list would put a lot less load on
the server -- but as I realized last email, the user-maintained list
doesn't give equivalent functionality to the category method, so it's
not a fair comparison anyway.
From some of the discussion on the talk page for the
stub template
(

category method does result in duplicating information in the database
(since the list of pages linking to the template would essentially
be identical to the category list).
So, comparing apples to apples, it still might be a better idea to
modify the "what links here" page so that it has a display closer to
that of a category listing. That would give the functionality
desired, without having to maintain two nearly identical and very
large tables in the database.
