I just did some more testing of MySQL 4.0.12, particularly
the boolean search. It didn't affect the speed of simple
searches at all, and it only sped up boolean ones a small
amount (maybe 5%, which could be within the variance of one
run to the next).
Of course, it didn't slow anything down, so it's a big win
in terms of functionality. Also, this preliminary test was only
with a small database; I'll do some more tests with a more
fully loaded one to see if that changes things.
