Hey Jason, now
that I bring it up, what's the chance that the new
machine can have a /var partition that we can reformat to Reiserfs?
Perhaps this is just superstition, but I once had a huge headache with
Reiserfs. Is it sold enough for production nowadays? Is it likely to
be sufficiently superior to more standard alternatives to risk using it?
I've been running Reiserfs on Piclab from day one, and never a hiccup.
That includes all the time I spent developing and testing the software.
Reiser 3 has been solid and has been a standard part of the kernel and
RedHat distributions for quite a while now. Reiser 4 is the latest
thing and it's supposedly "production quality", but that's probably a
little bleeding-edge, and we don't need any of its new features.
At some point, I fear that too-exotic efforts to
squeeze every last
ounce of performance out of the hardware will be counter-productive.
I agree; I don't think we should be running things that aren't well-
tested and have good reputations for reliability; but let's not forgo
genuinely useful features of newer software either.
I'm inclined to think we should upgrade to MySQL 4.0.12 as well, but
I'm not quite done testing that to my satisfaction, and at any rate
we can do that anytime. Choosing an FS obviously has to be done when
the machine is installed.
