A certain amount should be identified as a contingency reserve.
Hardware is not consistent when it comes to giving an advance warning of
its impending death. If it is a key item there may not otherwise be
time to seek the needed funding; immediate replacement would be
essential. Thus, establishing a contingency reserve at twice the
replacement cost of the most expensive single piece of hardware would be
prudent.
