I doubt it was him who filed the report.
If he suggested or urged it, that's criminal conspiracy.
Of course, that depends on what got filed. If someone called up the
police department and said "One of your grad students has this story
up on the web, and it's disturbing, you might want to take a look at
it" then that's not filing a false report. If they said "...and I
think he may have killed someone..." then that is a false report. And
anyone who urged it to be done or suggested it is probably guilty of
conspiracy.
Of course, you have to get the police to tell you (or your attorney)
the details of the filed report to know which case it was...
