The only custom is to always protect the wrong version
(<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wrong_Version>), although the
protection policy
(<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Protection_policy>) also
allows the version not favored by those violating the 3RR to be
protected.
