[Mediawiki-l] Create account - 'by email'

On the new 'Create an account' screen for v1.6 there is a button  
labeled 'by email'.  It seems to create a new account and then send  
the user an email notice teling them their password has been  
changed.  My users are finding it confusing, and i checked and it  
doesn't seem to exist on wikipedia.

What is the purpose of this button on the create a new account page?
Is there a way of disabling it?
