[Mediawiki-l] Cannot access protected property DatabaseMysql?

After installing mediaWiki 1.9 [or 1.8.2], upon trying to access the wiki
for the first time I get the following error;

PHP Fatal error:
Cannot access protected property DatabaseMysql::$mOut in 
includes/Database.php on line 422

Making mOut public shifts the error down to the next variable, not being 
able to access protected mFailFunction.

So it appears that I am having trouble accessing any of the DatabaseMysql 
properties.

I'm running Apache 2.0, PHP 5.2, MySQL 5.0

Any ideas?
