[Mediawiki-l] Extensions and wiki variables

I want to enclose a MW variable in extension tags and have the value passed 
to the extension.
For example, <myExtension>{{PAGENAME}}</myExtension> to pass the name of 
the article to the php function hooked to "myExtension".

Is there a way to do it? As is, the text "{{PAGENAME}}" is passed. I assume 
that the extension handling code would have to be modified to allow 
variables to be parsed, instead of passing the entire contents between the 
extensions markup tags.
