4.2.0 and 4.2.1 had serious security vulnerabilities, so avoid them! 
4.2.2 was the last of the 4.2.x series, iirc. (Look up the release 
notes on php.net if you want details.)

Sourceforge's project web servers seem to be running PHP 4.1.2, 
actually. (The login shell server has 4.2.2.) It should generally work 
(several projects run MediaWikis on their SF project accounts), but you 
may or may not have mysterious login session problems and it might be 
really slow depending on how the servers are faring.
