I tried that once and gave up as well :-).  So if someone

*But*: For any /development/ of MediaWiki or an extension
that needs a test installation viewable by the public (and
not just wants to use MediaWiki as a UI for a tool), I would
highly recommend MediaWiki-Vagrant in Labs
(https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:MediaWiki-Vagrant_in_Labs).
