Hello -

As you probably know, the Wikimedia Hackathon 2018
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2018>will be taking
place in Barcelona between May 18 and May 20, 2018.
For some context: this event is almost completely organized by volunteers
from Amical Wikimedia who mostly live in and around Barcelona, we on the
WMF Technical Collaboration team are involved in the capacities of some
program organization, helping to determine scholarships, and helping to
carry forward lessons from previous years.
WMF travel is organizing all flights for WMF staff but Amical Wikimedia is
in charge of the hotel and hotel room bookings.

Relevant information for you:

   - All WMF staff who are planning to attend MUST fill out both the
registration form AND also the hotel reservation form.
   - We will not be able to accommodate any more WMF staff into this event
after the registration deadline (see below).
   - If you are willing to share a room, the hotel reservation form
has a question where you can add specific names of whom you have
pre-arranged to share with, or can indicate that you are happy to
   share with anyone.

Deadline:

   - 3 January, 2018: Barcelona Hackathon registration opened
   - 2 March, 2018: This is the final deadline for WMF staff to register
for the Hackathon. *Registration will completely close for WMF staff
   after 2 March, 2018. *
   - Please don't wait until the deadline, it makes things harder
   for everyone!

Hackathon Background:

   - A main theme of this year's hackathon is "Technology related to
content translator" however participants are welcome to work on any
   projects or topics they like.
   - This event is an opportunity for WMF staff to work with, teach, mentor
and learn from community members around technical projects and issues that
are relevant to all areas of Wikimedia Tech.
   - Hackathons are organized un-conference style where everybody attending
gets equal access to organizing sessions and deciding how they spend their
time at the event. No keynotes, no private meetings and no required
projects take place at our main hackathons. This is a place (among other
things) to innovate, learn about new areas, and creatively solve old
   problems.
   - Most of the space at the event is informal working space, some of
which is broken up into tables and corners for specific topic areas.
Sessions are happening all the time in smaller rooms away from the working
   areas.
   - WMF teams and specialists are welcome to organize sessions, activities
or trainings that help those in our community learn about or begin
contributing to your areas. The more fun and constructive you make your
sessions the more that volunteers, affiliates, and other staff will
personally take away from your sessions and the more successful you will
   probably be.
   - We will begin emailing all participants much closer to the event with
details on how to get your sessions and trainings into the program. Many
sessions don't show up on the program until the first day of the hackathon.

Thanks very much, please let us know if you have any questions!
