Hi all,
I am attempting to set up a Wikivoyage Labs prototyping wiki, see
https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nova_Resource:Wikivoyage, which is
a WMF resource we can avail ourselves of. I got that far by dint of
perseverance over the past couple days. But now I'm up against the
hard part of cloning an instance of en.Wikivoyage to do prototyping
on. I just don't know how to do it.
Does anyone here know how to do this and want to help?
The Wikivoyage Labs prototyping wiki I am trying to create (doesn't
exist yet) would be for all wikivoyagers to use for hacking up pages
and experimenting. We could install extensions and basically do
whatever we want that is for the purpose of experimenting with and
developing Wikivoyage's look and features. For example, the Main Page
there could be hacked up and processed through the Mobile page creator
without messing with our production wiki. The whole wiki would be a
sandbox.
I'd like to see experimental instances of all the language versions of WV there.
The experiment I personally have in mind to do first, once we have
this set up, is to install the Universal Language Selector
extension[1] and see if I can configure it as a way to switch nicely
between the various language versions of WV.

My notes to myself about this are on my Labs userpage:

I'd love your help,
Roger :-)
Hi,
I did follow the Wikivoyage project proposal with interest and I greet
the work you have done throw that not so simple process.
I am now developing and updating another sister project proposal:
Wikikids http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikikids , an equivalent of
Wikipedia for 8-13 years old children.
The situation has some similarities with Wikitravel/wikivoyage, for
there is existing projects to be adopted (I opened Vikidia in French,
which is one of the two independent such wikis already well developed.)
Actually, we won't have the difficulty to deal with an unwilling wiki
owner as it happened for Wikitravel. I guess that the difficulty will be
rather to choose how to deal with the very neighbouring scope of Simple
English Wikipedia.
We had recently an answer/question from a representative of the other
similar (and well working) wiki WikiKids.nl that could also be adopted
and join the project :
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikikids#WikiKids_in_the_Netherlands
He asks "what would that mean for us" to be a sisterproject of Wikimedia.
That leaded me to you, what would you reply ? What are the advantages of
being a sisterproject of Wikimedia, especially for those that already
were ran as non-profit ?
I read the January thread "Reflections" (
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikivoyage-l/2013-January/thread.html#…
) that seems to show that the (re-)launching spot a big light on your
project and a big impulse. That was just during or short after the
notice on the Wikimedia projects. Do you have a more complete sight a
bit more than 2 months after that ?
Beside 2 Wikikids-like projects that are doing well, we opened Vikidia
in es: and it: in which didn't work so well. I wonder if it can give
another chance for them to develop.
I've read the submissions for Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong "Creating a
new sister project, the re-birth of Wikivoyage":
http://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Creating_a_new_sister_p…
Moreover, any advice for the next steps of this proposal or criticism on
how it's displayed now would be welcomed !
Thanks !

Hello all,
a few reflections from the swedish horizon, after a few days under the WMF
umbrella:
We have had an influx of serious, logged-in contributors, mainly from
Wikipedia in swedish, but also a couple of new stars. That's great!
We have also had a number of serious anonymous edits. That's even better!
Of course, we have also had our fair share of vandalism, both anonymous as
well as logged-in users. That's less nice, but it was expected.
So, thanks to all involved, it seems we're all well on our way!
Judging by the serious edits we have had on sv:, I have come to realise
that two guidelines/policies are crucial to us in this phase of the
project, namely "Welcome, Wikipedians" and "How to re-use Wikipedia
content". The latter guideline has a correspondence on Wikitravel Shared (
http://wikitravel.org/shared/How_to_re-use_Wikipedia_content), but I do not
see any current correspondent on any of the other language versions, except
sv:.
I checked the language versions (i.e. the ones currently online) and it
seems that it:, nl:, pt: and es: lack "Welcome Wikipedians". All language
versions except sv: seem to lack "How to re-use Wikipedia content".
I'd like to suggest that anyone with lingustical capability, active on the
language versions without these two guidelines, translate these guidelines,
since it will be of great help to you. On sv:, we also added the
aforementioned guidelines to our welcome message, in the hope that it may
reduce the amount of explanation needed. It seems to work!
All the best from a snowy and cold Sweden,
Riggwelter/Mattias

Romanian is up and running, and, from what I can see, badly needs new
editors.

My belated (I was travelling) congratulations to the communities of
Hebrew and Ukraininan Wikivoyage.
Cheers

Dear all,
I'm pleased to be able to announce that Wikivoyage Hebrew [1] and
Wikivoyage Ukrainian [2] have been opened today and are now open for
editing.
These are the first Wikivoyage editions that started completely new on
Incubator (there were a few pre-existing pages in Wikitravel, which the
contributors made use of, but no really developed wikis); and also the
first two not in Latin script.

That is not necessary. Anything you send to the list is automatically
forwarded to all subscribers; that is the main function of mailing list
management software.
There may be a list of subscribers available on one of the list's reference
pages; some lists provide that, some don't, and I do not know what this one
does. However, some people, including me, would be distinctly irritated if
you grabbed that list and used it to contact us directly rather than through
the list.
