Dear all,
We are currently preparing an upload of video content coming from a
production from the Dutch public broadcaster VPRO called "Mind of the
Universe
<https://www.vpro.nl/programmas/the-mind-of-the-universe/kijk/extra/english.html>".
A very exiting project that we will probably talk more about in the near
future.
Cool!
I was hoping to get some feedback on a few issues:
- the videos have been tagged with keywords. How could we incorporate
these in the metadata? Would we simply add those in de description field?
Some may work as category tags, but people on Commons are pretty specific
about how categorization should be used, so I would recommend against
simply injecting them without checking to make sure the usages match.
If in doubt, put them in the description in a predictable text list format
and they can be extracted and made better use of later. :)
- These tags are UNESCO thesaurus terms. Does anyone
know whether it would
make sense to link to these terms on Wikidata in the Commons-metadata? I'm
struggling to see the added value but it can probably be done.
No idea on this one. :)
- Finally, we also have subtitles available in .srt
formats. Are there
people here who have experience with uploading videos to commons combined
with subtitles?
Subtitles in .srt format may be saved as pages in the 'TimedText'
namespace, with the filename followed by ".<lang>.srt".
For instance for this video:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Folgers.ogv
has subtitles in:
English -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Folgers.ogv.en.srt
French -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Folgers.ogv.fr.srt
Swedish -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Folgers.ogv.sv.srt
etc
In the future we plan to add native support for WebVTT subtitles and will
provide automated conversion from .srt, and hopefully a better editor &
bulk uploader for the subtitles...
Beware that the subtitle support in the current video player is still a bit
finicky, so test that things display correctly.
