How can project ideas being assigned to a student before all students have submitted their proposal. i too wanted to put my proposal but my mentor says he has already selected one student for this project. this is not fair.

Usually interested students would've approached projects/possible mentors and started working well before the application start deadline ( Its not a necessity, but would increase your chance ).

Looks like you are not looking into #mediawiki and #wikimedia-dev seriously. Prospective students are required ( and they are doing well ) to start working with micro-tasks well before the student application start deadline. Personally, I could see that microtasks getting assigned and worked upon within hours after posting in the phab page. why is that its always necessary that you have to solve task in order to get the project.you should also look at the student's idea,before rejecting him.j

but on 11th march the mentor said in his comment that he has already found some strong students for this project.that means from the beginning only you guys have fixed who will work for you,that is before the student applications begin. he also mentioned in his statement that even if you solve microtasks you would not be selected.I dont deny the fact that the students he has selected may be good ,but they are not the only potential candidates, there will always be a lot of candidates better than him. of course the mentor is not a god that he will know frm the beginning that who is the best candidate for this project without actually looking at al the proposals . even in the official gsoc site in their time line it is mentioned that the mentors are giving a time period where they look at all the proposals and find for any duplication.i know you guys are developers but without even considering a student's proposal you are telling him that you will not be selected.this can only happen if the either the candidate is very close to the mentor i.e from his nation or from his family. Completing microtasks is a way for applicants to demonstrate that they are able to understand the codebase relevant to the project. If the project already has a very good candidate, then you have two options: 1. be a better candidate. (you never know your luck, the other very good candidate may not even apply before the deadline) 2. apply for a different project. Whatever option you take, you need to write a very good application, be active in the IRC channel, and fixing relevant bugs will boost your luck in being selected. There are 11 projects 'Featured for GSoC and Outreachy' status on https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/possible-tech-projects/ There are an additional 7 in 'Missing Mentors' status. If you write a good application for one of those, we'll try harder to find a mentor. In google-melange, I see only three projects which have a candidate application, so that leaves 15 projects without any candidates. There are also 38 possible projects in other status. If you have an idea which isn't on the 'possible tech projects' board, you should search Phabricator extensively, as Phabricator is full of good ideas - almost 15 years worth of good ideas are in the database. Yaron has a very good track as a mentor of students that are indeed strongs and complete their projects, but I also see your point. The replies of my colleagues, all with mentor/intern experience, are very valid as well. While this approach might have this problem, the frequent alternative (not to say anything for fairness, even when you have already a very strong candidate) generates a lot of extra work to candidates with less options in that exact project. Meanwhile, these candidates might be missing good opportunities in other projects still looking for candidates... and in this sense it is also fair to warn them and encourage them to focus in other projects where they might have better chances. While we cannot be certain about measuring the fairness of each approach, I can assure you that the Wikimedia mentors and community all go an extra mile or two with a process that enforces transparency and public participation well beyond GSoC's requirements.

I understand, but this is exactly what the mentor of this project idea was trying to avoid by commenting publicly https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T90238#1110579 twelve days ago. As he has pointed out when I asked, by that time there were other contributors working on the microtasks proposed. All this information was linked from the Phabricator task, again, thanks to the Wikimedia evaluation process that extends on transparency and community participation on top of GSoC process.

We have tried once accepting two interns to collaborate on the same project, and the experience was not stellar... But what is more important, regardless of what happens before the deadline for projects, all proposals submitted to Wikimedia are treated equally, applying common standards (see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_programs/Possible_projects#Possible… and the links mentioned there). You have submitted your proposal to Google Melange, which is the required step to be accepted in GSoC. Good! Please create the related Phabricator task as indicated in https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code_2015#Add_your_proposal and work on one microtask or more. This is the best way to be assessed fairly, based on your proposal and contributions.
