Hi, The Google Summer of Code student application phase is closed. We have got a total of 69 applications from 60 students. The numbers so far are: * 52 valid applications from 51 students. We are still triaging some of the last submissions. This number might decrease over the weekend. * 11 ignored from 10 students: out of scope, clearly incomplete or duplicate. * 6 withdrawn by the students. The table at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Summer_of_Code_2013 should match the list in the GSoC site. Next milestone: May 6 Telling Google the min/max number of slots we want before May 6. Last year we got 9 slots and by all measurements we need a lot more this time. Both students and mentors need to work hard to convince Google that we deserve them! Based on the feedback received from the mentors we are requesting 11 min 21 max Let's see how it goes. What is quite impressive is that almost all those 21 features are backed by two mentors, with almost no duplication! And very qualified ones. I hope Google appreciates this important detail. We will know on Wednesday. Tomorrow Monday I will send details about the selection of candidates.

... WE HAVE GOT 21 SLOTS ALLOWED!!!! First: congratulations to everybody involved: mentors AND students. This number reflects succinctly how much someone like Google trusts you. Second: this relaxes a lot our selection process. Between this and OPW we can accommodate many good proposals. Third: still, we will keep standards high as we have done so far. Having 21 slots doesn't mean that we will take them blindly. We will continue asking questions to mentors and students about the feasibility of each proposal and we will consider accepted only those that have all the foundations in place. Last but not least: remember the important point about confidentiality. Now several projects might look pretty obvious candidates but this doesn't authorize anybody to leak / pre-announce our decisions made. Google is still the one that must announce all accepted GSoC projects first. PS: and now, if you don't mind, I'll go get some sophisticated alcohol-free drink to celebrate.
