Paddington station

Paddington station or London Paddington is the name of a major railway station in the Paddington area of London, which is the London terminus for long distance trains to the West of England and South Wales and some West London commuter services. Stops on several lines of the London Underground are also part of the station complex: the Hammersmith & City Line at a surface station on the north side of the station and parallel with it; the District Line and Circle Line in a cutting in front of the station and perpendicular to it, and the Bakerloo Line in deep-level tubes below the station.

Key points of this layout

The name of the site is clearly put at the top of the page. Newcomers see immediately where they are
The "utility" links below such as "main page" etc are smaller. The eye can skip over them to the page title.
the language links are still in the top bar, since the other options had drawbacks (down the sidebar: makes the sidebar too long, no good if the sidebar is set to be fixed. In a drop-down: bad since the user has to vlick to see what is available)
however, the lang links are now beneath the page title. This is for two reasons: firstly, it greatly reduces the clutter between the top of the page and the article title. The reader sees what they are looking for more quickly. Secondly, language links "belong" to the specific article, and not to the "site-wide" links in the top bar.
the same goes for the top bar "Printable version | Edit this page | Page history" links. They relate to the current article.

Problems

IE shows a border cutting across the sidebar. Will fix later.
it's ugly in Netscape 4.x but usable.
