The https://dumps.wikimedia.org web interface for downloading various
dump files is currently offline. The rsync service for external
mirroring is as well. Local network NFS consumers may or may not be
working depending on which server the consumer is attached to.
This unexpected outage is the result of hardware issues following a
short planned maintenance. We are currently investigating the root
cause of the outage and will post additional updates as they become
available. Thanks for your patience.

Hey all,
After noticing a spike in DB related errors following today's Train
promotion of 1.32.0-wmf.10, I decided to rollback group1 to 1.32.0-wmf.8
(the previously deployed version, despite the numbering). Some teams are
already aware of the blocker task and others have been pinged.[0]
Also, just a reminder that we have a task for each train rollout to track
potential blockers.[1] You can follow that task to track each train's
progress. To view which version of MediaWiki any given wiki is running, you
can always use the "Wikimedia MediaWiki Versions" tool on Toolforge.[2]
Thanks for everyone's help in the #wikimedia-operations channel today!
Your conductor for the week,
Dan

Hello everyone,
If you don't edit/create dashboards on grafana.wikimedia.org feel free
to skip the rest of this email, it does not affect you. Those of you
who do, please read on.
Our grafana installation dates back quite a bit and it has a custom
LDAP authentication and authorization implementation. Nowadays Grafana
has native support for LDAP and can query LDAP groups. After some
lengthy evaluation and problem solving in
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T170150, the SRE team feels ready to
deprecate the custom LDAP implementation and migrate to the native
one. What does this mean?
* grafana-admin.wikimedia.org (the entry point for users to
authenticate and create dashboards) will be removed
* grafana.wikimedia.org WILL remain as is and will very only slightly
change, specifically the login menu part (see below)
* You will be logging in using a menu in the left hand side of
grafana.wikimedia.org using the exact same credentials as before.
* The grafana database user attributes email and name will be
automatically populated on login from LDAP and enforced. This is
expected to be irrelevant for almost everyone, but if you 've edited
manually your profile in grafana expect those 2 fields to be overriden
with data from LDAP.
The date for the migration is June 27th 09:00 UTC and the maintenance
window will be 3 hours long. We don't expect it to really last that
long however. Expect grafana.wikimedia.org downtime during that
timeframe
Regards,

Dear members of the MediaWiki developer team,
having familiarized myself a bit with the MediaWiki architecture, I
believe that I would punctually change the MediaWiki software in order
to speed up the page load at the client side.
Namely, I believe that I can extremely significantly increase pageload
speed by minimizing the rendering time inside the browser. More
specifically, by reducing the number of block elements (and more
generally, any (X)HTML elements), the expensive rendering of these will
diminish. Using this method, I have obtained extremely significant
speedups even on a quite reasonable machine (built by myself).
This optimization would require that I change the way that wikisyntax
is translated into (X)HTML. Moreover, I'd have to redesign the "default
components" of the pages.
Since MediaWiki is so extensively used, these optimizations may quite
substantially reduce energy demands across the globe, and also lead to
performance improvements among scientists and laymen alike.
With best regards,
A. Fellhauer, a.k.a. Mathmensch, English Wikibooks

Wikimedia Foundation Inc. employees have blocked the ability of new users
to report bugs or file feature requests or even read the issue tracker.
But yes, please focus on me calling Andre a troll for resetting the
priority of <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T197550>. My single comment
("andre__: Such a troll.") is clearly what contributes to an unwelcoming
environment for contributors, not blocking them from reading the site and
demanding that they be vetted first. Great work, all.
A pseudo-focus on "civility" while you take a hard-line and skeptical view
toward outsiders. Maybe these people are auditioning for roles in the
Trump Administration. :-)
I'm mostly forwarding this garbage here so that there's some better and
more appropriate context when, in a few months, someone says "well, the
code of conduct committee has dealt with dozens of incidents! Clearly it's
necessary!" The people pushing this campaign for more bureaucracy have
repeatedly declined to provide specifics about incidents because it's
pretty obvious that nobody would take them seriously (and rightfully!) if
there were a clearer understanding of what they're actually doing.
Best!
