Hello,
We (Andre and I) are organizing the first Public Bug
Day<http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Meeting_preparations>for
this year, and we need to decide a topic We would like to hold the bug
day mid-late January.
The topic could be going through "Mediawiki/General" or "Wikimedia/General"
and assigning them to the to the correct product/component, assigning a
priority, etc.
However, Quim suggested (and I would prefer this), to work with a dev team
and triage bugs that deal with their project. Are there any dev teams that
would be available and willing to participate in a Bug Day? We're going
to establish monthly bug days, so if a team can't participate in January,
they will have other opportunities in the future.
Thank you,
Valerie
Hello everyone!
As part of growing a sustainable technical community around MediaWiki in
India, a new mailing list has been created. You can subscribe to it at
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-india
This is the first geographical MediaWiki list (rationale[1]) - and hence
we're still experimenting with the scope. If topics being discussed on
mediawiki-india would benefit from wider exposure, I'm sure they'll 'bubble
up' to wikitech-l or mediawiki-l. I also think that a lot of talk about
events that happen locally. It would also serve as a central mailing list
for the new city-wide MediaWiki groups that form in India.
But honestly, I've no idea how this is going to be used :) So [[WP:BOLD]]
and go wild :)
Looking forward to having more Mediawiki hackers from India!

I am mildly surprised by Jenkins giving a +1 Code Review (not Verification)
here.

Just wondering if there is maybe a setup issue.
Cheers,
Denny

Hi, last week we had the first meeting of the Outreach Program for
Women. You can find casual minutes here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_Program_for_Women/2013-01-03_Meeting
(meeting participants, feel free improving the page)
Please check the User pages of the six interns. All the better if you
dare to say Hi in their Talk pages!
Note to the interns: you are encouraged to reply to this email also to
say hi. If you specify in which areas you welcome feedback and help you
might get some. :)

Given the recent conversations about MediaWiki Groups - folks should know that AffCom (which will likely be reviewing those group's applications) is seeking new members - might be helpful for some MW folks to be involved - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliations_Committee/Call_for_Candidates_…

>> Dear all,
>>
>> The Affiliations Committee [1], the committee that is responsible for
>> guiding volunteers in establishing Chapters, User Groups and Thematic
>> Organizations ("affiliates" in short) and approving them when they are
>> ready is looking for about 6 new members.
>>
>> The main focus of AffCom is to guide groups of volunteers in forming
>> affiliates. We make sure that the group is large enough to be viable
>> (and advise them on how to get bigger), review bylaws for compliance
>> with the requirements and best practices, and advise the Board of the
>> Wikimedia Foundation on issues connected to Chapters, Thematic
>> Organizations and User Groups.
>>
>> This requires communication with volunteers all over the World,
>> negotiating skills and cultural sensitivity and the ability to
>> understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill
>> sets in our members.
>>
>> Key skills/experience that we are looking for in candidate members,
>> are typically:
>>
>> * Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of
>> volunteers worldwide
>> * Willingness to work in a sometimes bureaucratic, sometimes political
>> process
>> * 4 hours per week availability[2]
>> * International orientation
>> * Very good communication skills in English
>> * Ability to work and communicate with other cultures
>> * Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF
>> * Communication skills in other languages are a major plus
>> * Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus
>>
>> With the help of the Affiliations Committee, 2012 has been an exciting
>> year of transformation for the movement with the introduction of new
>> types of affiliation. This means that the workload of the Committee
>> has increased and diversified and help is wanted! Currently many
>> applications to become a Chapter, Thematic Organization or User Group
>> are in the pipeline and can use your attention and dedication!
>>
>> You can send your applications with your name, contact data (e-mail,
>> wiki username), experience and motivation to join to the AffCom email
>> address, affcom AT lists DOT wikimedia DOT org by January 12, 2013.
>> You will get a confirmation that your application came through.
>>
>> Members are usually selected every twelve months for staggered two
>> year terms. The applications will be considered by the current members
>> and outgoing members and Committee advisers, who are not seeking
>> re-selection.
>>
>> Since I will be a candidate for re-selection myself, this process will
>> be managed by another committee member, Lodewijk Gelauff. I hope for

Hello,
We have upgraded our Jenkins installation to version 1.480.2 (LTS
release). My basic regression tests did not catch any issue, if you see
anything wrong please ping me and or open a bug report against
"Wikimedia > Testing Infrastructure" in Bugzilla (I am in CC).
The bug requesting the upgrade was:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41973
I will get the Jenkins plugin updated this afternoon.
cheers,

Third issue of the MediaWiki community metrics monthly report!
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Community_metrics/December_2012
We have added a section with social media stats. Hopefully next month we
will show mediawiki.org data to reflect the documentation work.
There is a big increase in the total amount of lines of code and active
contributors. The addition of Kiwix and MediaWiki Editor Engagement
Experiments has something to do with this. Probably Ohloh crawled more
of the hundreds of repositories we have on file. But underneath this
there is the main factor that the MediaWiki community is growing
year-to-year!
As a contrast, MediaWiki core got the lowest amount of commits since
June 2010 - probably related with the post 1.20.* releases + holidays?

Hey everybody,
just a reminder that we're going to have an IRC meeting tomorrow for
developers regarding Echo. This will be for answering all your burning
questions about what Echo is and how it will work, as well as how you
can make use of it in your own extensions for providing notifications to
users.
Where: #wikimedia-tech
When: Wed. Jan. 30 at 11am Pacific Time
If you want to try out Echo in the meantime, check out our testing page,
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Echo/Testing, and try it out on
mediawiki.org.
