I'm thinking about simplifying logo updates by simply using
$wgLogo = $wgUploadPath.'/b/bc/wiki.png';
This way all the users need to do is uploading the image to Image:Wiki.
png. The image should probably be protected, but that's up to the
sysops.
This might also be a sensible default in DefaultSettings.php, we'd need
to supply images/b/bc/Wiki.png in that case.
Any thoughts?

Hi all.
I have been helping for a while to translate the interface of the Greek
wikipedia with much success due to the namespace feuture of the wiki
software.
There are though some things that cannot be translated via this interface
(or so I believe) like month names?
Can somebody point me to the correct procedures for changing such items
that are not included in the namespace?
Thanx

LS,
I had a look at http://wikimedia.org/rebuildtextindex.log and noticed that there is no message for completion of the he: database. It should go to 17268 it stops at 6500 and it does not have a completion message.
It is great that the rebuild is rolling again though :)

So, a couple of thoughts I should probably keep to myself.
0) Everybody's time here is valuable. Being respectful of each other's
time constraints is probably a good practice for working together
successfully.
1) It worries me that programmers would avoid making changes to
MediaWiki just because it's hard to figure out where to make those
changes. For my own part, I have to admit that I kind of dread going
into the MW source -- it sometimes feels like a jungle in there.
Whether that complexity is real or if I'm just a third-rate programmer
(more probable) is an open question, as is the question of whether the
complexity may just be inherent to our problem domain.
But if the complexity is real, and not absolutely necessary, the work
put into a code refactoring effort (MW 2.0?) might pay off in having a
more accessible codebase that more people can contribute to. It would be
a _ton_ of work, though, and I wouldn't presume to impose that task on
anyone (see point 0 above B-).

I found [[Gaasterlân-Sleat]] on orphaned pages, obviously a broken
copy of [[Gaasterlân-Sleat]]. When I tried to delete the former, instead
the latter (correct) one was deleted, while the broken one remained.
As if we didn't have enough problems on the site right now ;-)

Ariel is reporting many errors of this kind:
Last_error: query partially completed on the master (error on master: 1053) and was aborted. There is a chance that your master is inconsistent at this point. If you are sure that your master is ok, run this query manually on the slave and then restart the slave with SET GLOBAL SQL_SLAVE_SKIP_COUNTER=1; START SLAVE; .
I step forward using
SET GLOBAL SQL_SLAVE_SKIP_COUNTER=1; START SLAVE;
but new errors happen all the time.

As Ariel is now in production, I enabled full text search on all wikis. I tryed to load balance search to Ariel, Tim could you check it when you have some spare time.
Another pb, the script to rebuild the index doesnt seem to work, so search is often empty. Of course each time you're making an edit, the search is updated :) So you only have to edit all articles (joke)

Hi all,
It seems Breton Wikipedia was lost during the big crash (few weeks ago).
If I didn't misunderstand, a version may be on a hard disk backup (80Go) but
it's would be long and hard to try to retrieve it.
My questions are:
1) Does someone have a local backup of Breton Wikipedia?
2) Does someone know how many pages there were on this Wikipedia?
If there were only few pages it's perhaps faster to set a new Wikipedia
rather than try to retrieve old one.
Thanks for help.

Somebody disabled new page creation for relatively new users on meta.
This make it impossible to, for instance, create a user page or custom
style sheet page, as well as breaking general wiki functionality for
newly registered users.
Since it's friggin' easy to delete newly created spam/vandalism pages, I
don't see the point. I've taken this out.
