Dear Discussion Coordinators,
We have scheduled an 1-hour call for this Friday for all Discussion
Coordinators who are interested in a walk-through of the set-up and
the discussion guide for cycle 2. You will also have the time to ask
questions there.
If you have very specific questions, please raise them via email
directly to me, as 1 hour might otherwise not be enough for diving
deeply into the material for your group's conversation.
The call will take place on hangout this Friday, 17:00 UTC [1]. Here's
the link to the hangout. At the start time of the call, you can click
on it and I will accept your join request:

We are currently finalizing the discussion guide and will share it
with you before the call.
Best regards,
Nicole

Dear Wikimedians,
I am writing to you in your role as Discussion Coordinator for your
Organized Group. I am excited to announce that we have just started
the new cycle of discussions in the movement strategy process. Here’s
an update update and information on the next steps:
== Cycle 1: Report and synthesis published ==
In the first cycle of discussions, movement groups and communities
have created 1,800 statements as results from online and in-person
conversations. Together with the attached keywords, these statement
have then been analyzed and clustered to 13 subthemes. In the cycle 1
report you can learn more about this process and the outputs.[1]
From the 13 subthemes, a few turned out to be tactical instead of
strategic, and others could be merged under one bigger theme. We also
found that among the participants of cycle 1, there is a sense of
unity and agreement about the things Wikimedia should be doing in
2030. This is why we can start cycle 2 with only 5 themes instead of
20.[2] Please note that these are of course not the final themes, but
just an initial working draft:
* Healthy, Inclusive Communities
* The Augmented Age
* A Truly Global Movement
* The Most Respected Source of Knowledge
* Engaging in the Knowledge Ecosystem
== Cycle 2: Review and prioritize the themes; understand the tradeoffs
(May 11–June 12) ==
Chapters, Thematic Organizations, User Groups, Committees, the
Wikimedia Foundation as well as other semi-organized groups that
support the Wikimedia Movement are invited to review the five themes
and join the debate. You are free to choose the type of your
discussion – be it online or offline, on wiki or via any other channel
that you are most comfortable with.
For each theme[2, click on each theme there to go to each theme’s
subpage], we ask five questions about the impact of these potential
themes and the tradeoffs we as a movement will have to make. At the
moment, the 5 themes are really broad and comprehensive. The intent of
these discussions is to start to prioritize and debate the themes’
importance for the movement’s future, and then better define the
themes. To succeed in any strategic venture, we must not only declare
what we will do, but also what we will not.
In your group’s conversation, you can discuss as many themes as you
like; we ask you to choose the ones that are most (or least) important
to you. You will find detailed information and tips on how to best
design and document your group’s discussion in our updated discussion
guide. We are currently still working on it and will share it with you
next week.
Cycle 2 will run through June 12, which means that we ask all
discussion coordinators to publish their outputs on June 12 at the
latest.
== Host your own partnerships dinner! ==
Wikimedia is part of a larger ecosystem of partners and organizations
that care about the future of free knowledge. Affiliates work with
educational institutions, GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and
Museums), technology partners, civil society and digital rights
organizations and governments. If you would like to include external
partners or experts in your conversation about the future of
Wikimedia, we offer funding to host a partner event. If you are
interested interested, please apply at least two weeks before you want
to host your event. You can find all the necessary information in how
to involve partners in your strategy conversations on Meta.[3]
As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you
might have. We will also offer a video call for the discussion
coordinators soon and are working on getting more information up on
Meta. I’ll get back to you with the details early next week.
Best regards and happy weekend,
Nicole
