Need help! I am looking for information on railway
systems from
Poznan, Poland to Antwerp, Belgium by train. My Grandfather traveled
one of these routes in 1892 when he was 21 years old. He went by
boat, SS Pennsylvania, on to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I do not
believe he had any connection through the Benelux countries, but I
am not sure? Thanx. K. Johnson.
It is outside the scope of wikipedia-l to answer this kind of
question, but it sure is an interesting one. On maps from 1892 the
railroads go all over the Ruhr and surrounding area, making it
impossible to tell which one was used. It could have been Berlin,
Hanover, Cologne, Aachen, Brussels to Antwerp. Going from Hanover
over Osnabrück, Münster, Wesel, and either Venlo or Tilburg to Antwerp
is a straighter line on the map, but requires the crossing into
Noord-Brabant in the Netherlands. You probably have to find old
timetables, or contact some German railroad museum. Are you even sure
your grandfather went by train all the way? Taking the train from
Posen via Berlin to Hamburg or Bremen and a steam ship along the coast
to Antwerp might be one alternative.
