Aren't they performing the same role? "Ambassador" seems perfectly fine and
appropriate to me.
maybe I have misunderstood, but it doesn't seem to me that they are.
I am Ambassador of the fr: pedia -- that means I read the mailing lists
and report things of interest to the french pedia. I also raise issues
on their behalf to the mailing lists, and I should probably be tidying
up french pages on meta, and so on.
Being on hand to talk to reporters in french seems to be a different
thing. It's external instead of internal, for one thing.
Ambassadors are go-betweens for the different language branches of
Wikipedia. They have opposite counterparts. What you're talking about
here is press officers; representatives to the outside world -- the
press do not have ambassadors to Wikipedia!
sorry to nitpick, but there is a risk of confusion: I am French
ambassador, but I do not wish to be French press officer!
