(Taking a late night break from law homework)
Are we news source or are we a reference source about current topics? It
seems that is the fundamental question we need to answer when considering
implementing a strict review policy on Wikinews.
I'm not sure a tighter review process would help Wikinews as it currently
exists - and is probably counter to its current mission. We need to remind
ourselves that a news product is not the same as reference product.
The main problem with review processes in wiki is that they are lengthy -
usually taking days (or weeks) before a consensus is found - or sought.
The most important aspect that differentiates news from other forms of
information reporting is its timeliness and the fleeting nature of its value
(The "new" in news) -- professionally, peer review is usually reserved for
scholarly publications that appear as monthly or quarterly reference
journals - which definitely are usually of very high quality but also
definitely are not "news" per se.
Now if you want Wikinews to become a reference like other wikimedia
products, then we should install a tight review process.
But I must point out in my opinion, that change will drive away most
journalists from the project since they prefer to write news, not reference
texts.
Now - back to my studies.. Be back after finals (end of June)

I continue to be very skeptical of the existing
process for
setting up
new language editions. The problems with Serbian
Wikinews
seem quite
clear to me, especially having just visited
Serbia and Croatia.
Would you be so kind to enlighten the rest of us?
The process provides insufficient review, and I
propose that we
immediately halt the creation of new wikinews editions
until such time
as we significantly improve the process.
Perhaps you could elaborate first on
* what kind of review you have in mind
* what evidence there is that the process so far hasn't had
the intended
result, namely, to measure whether there is going to be sufficient
interest in the new language edition
* why this only applies to Wikinews, and not to Wikibooks or
Wikiquote,
for example.
