Perfect finale for COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2008 with exhibition size and number of
buyers both achieving new heights

COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2008, the second largest ICT exhibition in the world, ended
on June 7th. It was the first time ever that 4 exhibition halls have been
used in COMPUTEX TAIPEI, namely TWTC Hall 1, TWTC Hall 3, Taipei
International Convention Center and the brand new Nangang Exhibition Hall.
With this much capacity the scale of the exhibition has increased by 53
percent compared with last year. According to estimates made by the
organizers, the total number of visitors this year, amounted to 106,517
people, within which 34,685 are overseas buyers, 5 percent more than last
year's 33,027, reaching a new height. It is also estimated that the 5-day
exhibition has brought purchase orders for Taiwan's ICT industry that
amounts to more than 20 billion US dollars, effectively increasing Taiwan's
visibility on the world stage. COMPUTEX TAIPEI is not only a trade
exhibition, but is also one of the most important information and technology
exchange platforms for the global ICT industry.
The largest number of buyers was again from the USA and next in place are
Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, India, Russia
etc. The increase of buyers from Asian territories shows that Asia has
already become the center of the global IT industry market and also that the
demand for IT products is rapidly growing in rising economies like China,
India and Russia.
WiMAX and ultra-portable NB have become the focus points of COMPUTEX,
attracting endless market opportunities
According to the results of statistical analyses of pre-registered buyers
and IPOs, communication products (3G, WiMAX), industrial computers, Mobile
Devices / UMPCs, touch screens, Green IT represent a major proportion on the
buyer's target product procurement list this year. Coinciding with the four
main product themes of this year's exhibition, which is W.I.N.G. (WiMAX, ICT
Crossover, New Generation NB, Green IT). Among these products, WiMAX and
ultra-portable notebooks are especially high-profiled.
WiMAX is the main event of this year's COMPUTEX, starting with the signing
of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Taiwan Ministry of
Economic Affairs (MOEA) and Intel Taiwan, to invest 500 million US dollars
to jointly accelerate the commercial deployment of WiMAX in Taiwan. And then
there is the exhibition of WiMAX Expo, Taipei, which coincided with COMPUTEX
TAIPEI, showing Taiwan's transition into a proverbial "WiMAX Island" that
inhabits all the latest technology and products related to WiMAX. The WiMAX
shuttle bus service is providing visitors with the opportunity to experience
the stable and fast internet connection of WiMAX, even when the user is
traveling at high speed on a vehicle, in this instance, a bus. Many buyers
have expressed that the first time they began to understand and actually use
WiMAX, was at COMPUTEX, and they also believe that, in the future, WiMAX can
connect the concepts of digital family with consumer electronics, thereby
creating huge market opportunities.
And the ultra-portable notebook computer market with display sizes below
10-inch, is no longer dominated solely by the Eee PC from Asustek. Other
manufacturers have also begun to put their products into the market, like
the Aspire One from Acer, the Netbook M912 from Gigabyte, the Wind NB from
MSI and the second generation OEM laptop from ECS, the Classmate PC etc.
have all appeared in the exhibition. In addition, E-lead, AWARE, Amtek are
also launching products with similar concepts. From these newly launched
products, there are more innovative and user-friendly designs aimed at
screens, keyboards and operational systems.
Besides the competition between computer systems manufacturers, the
activities of semiconductor giants like Intel and AMD are also a hotspot of
attention. Starting with the announcement of Intel Atom at day one of the
exhibition, the Atom processor has become the hottest keyword at this year's
exhibition. You can find the trails of Intel Atom on a wide variety of
product applications, including ultra-portable NB, MID, desktop PC,
motherboards and even embedded systems. To respond to this development, AMD
has announced a new NB platform codenamed Puma, and revealed that
manufacturers like Toshiba, NEC, Fujitsu and Acer are already using this
platform. Obviously, the competition of next generation NB is reaching
DEFCON One.
Best Choice award winning products are highly sought-after; results for the
popularity award "Buyers' Choice" are out
The organizers have specially set up two pavilions separately at Shinyi and
Nangang this year, to exhibit the Best Choice award winning products. During
the exhibition, buyers and the media alike were continuously asking for
details about the products. The Best Choice award list has become sort of an
indicator for product procurement and media reports. According to the jury,
which consists of IPO and juries from international awards, it is possible
to get a peep view of this year's main product trends, during the product
choosing process.Therefore, the award winning products represent the best
trendsetting products of this year.
After the Best Choice award list was announced at the first day of the
exhibition, a buyer's popularity vote was held and ended at 6:00pm on June
6th. The activity lasted for 4 days and accumulated about 5000 votes.
Finally, the winner of this year's Buyers' Choice for Best Choice Award is
the ARES CG6155 by Asustek, which is also winner of the award category,
Product Design-Industrial Design. Asustek is also the greatest winner of
Best Choice this year, winning the most awards.
Reputation for being an excellent procurement exhibition and ICT information
and technology exchange platform
To enhance the B2B platform features of COMPUTEX TAIPEI, the organizers have
limited the access of the first 2 days of the exhibition to "buyers only",
which has received a lot of positive approval from buyers and exhibiting
manufacturers alike. In addition, the Taipei Computer Association (TCA), one
of the COMPUTEX organizers, has held 3 Taiwan-Japanese match making forums
with topics like embedded systems, WiMAX and PND products. The purpose of
these forums is to help facilitate the understanding between Taiwanese
manufacturers and overseas buyers, so that manufacturers can better
understand the procurement demands of buyers and buyers can also know more
about the research and development capabilities of Taiwanese manufacturers.
Furthermore, according to the interview results of many buyers and foreign
press it is a common perception that COMPUTEX is successfully integrating
the supply chain of the ICT industry, and making it more convenient for
buyers to fulfill their procurement needs. In addition, many new trends and
technological results that are not necessarily being shown at other
international exhibitions can be seen here at COMPUTEX. One buyer from South
Africa has even given the remark that COMPUTEX is the "place to be" for
people working in the ICT industry, revealing the fact that COMPUTEX has
left a deeply positive impression as an international procurement
exhibition.

Hi,
I recently developed a MediaWiki extension, that allows to export news in RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 format in easy manner. The extension is called "News Channel" and is now available at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:News_Channel. Basically, when user or aggregation program requests a feed, the extension gets specified number of latest articles from some specified category (e.g. [[Category:Published]]), exports it to RSS/Atom feed format and sends to user. Articles's title will be the headline and article's text will be the description of news item. Feed is automatically linked from every page of the wiki, like recent changes feed is linked. First I developed it for my own site, but I thought it could be useful for other projects, especially for Wikinews. Customization is possible.

Building an Ecosystem for Mobile Broadband

There are already more than 165 commercially deployed HSPA networks in more than 75 countries. What's more, a burgeoning ecosystem of mobile broadband devices and services has emerged around the technology. For example, there are more than 400 HSPA-enabled devices on the market-including phones, notebooks, PC modems and wireless routers.
Ericsson sees mobile broadband being integrated into notebook PCs and other devices in three waves: first in notebooks aimed at business users; second in notebooks aimed at consumers; and third in other consumer electronic devices such as MIDs, GPS navigators, in-car entertainment systems, gaming devices and cameras to name a few.
By 2011, analysts predict that almost 200 million notebooks will ship annually, and Ericsson believes that at least half of these will have HSPA embedded modules.

Today, the Internet users worry about the quality and security of the network. Telecom carriers face to the decline of voice-related revenue and increase in investment for IP network while maintaining the existing network. NTT decided seamless migration form telephone and metallic access network to IP and optical fiber access network in its mid-term management strategy. At present, Japan's broadband networks are the world's fastest and lowest cost, and the number of NTT's FTTH user reaches about 9 million. NTT started NGN service over FTTH infrastructure at this March. NTT intends to enlarge NGN service area up to entire current fiber access area by the end of FY 2010.

BT started to construct NGN, 21 Century Network, firstly for VoIP to reduce network costs. NTT started NGN, FLET'S HIKSARI Next, this March mainly for new services and new revenues targeting 3-play or 4-play.

Hi again,
I did some thinking...well that sounds to great a message ;) I had an
idea, how about creating a "tool" that allows people to upload one
headline at a time, so the same way the wikinews usually work. Okay
that's not quite clear yet...
Let's say someone writes a Headline in the Newsroom (if that is actually
the place) and he could also record just this one headline and store it
somewhere either in the newsroom or somewhere else. The radio would then
pick the last 5 or 6 headlines recorded and build adhoc news. We would
have to come up with a mechanism of keeping more important stuff longer
in the loop of course, but I figured it would bring down the threshold
for someone to record a part of the news, as it is 20 seconds rather
than several minutes one has to record...

Well I would work on the text a bit, but as a general idea ;)
As of today, the "FlaggedRevs" extension is available to any wiki
community that wishes to use it. FlaggedRevs is a tool for patrolling
changes, identifying high quality article versions, and changing the
default version shown to unregistered users. It's highly configurable.
As such, we're making it available in two configurations:
1) A minimally intrusive "patrolling" configuration;
2) Custom configurations per your request.

Larger wiki communities will probably benefit more from the use of
this feature than smaller ones. If you have problems keeping vandalism
in check, and/or want to experiment with new ways to identify high
quality content, you should look into this functionality.

== Patrolling Configuration ==
In the Patrolling Configuration, any user who has been registered for
more than 21 days and has made at least 150 edits will be
automatically given the permission to patrol changes for vandalism.
Only changes made by users who are not permitted to patrol changes
need to be patrolled.
In addition, sysops will be given the permission to flag versions of
"featured articles" in accordance with existing nomination processes.
(In other words, this gives you the ability to identify specific
_versions_ of an article as "featured", rather than the article as a
whole.) Finally, sysops will be permitted to define on a per-page
basis that changes need to be patrolled before being visible to
unregistered readers. This is an alternative to semi-protection; it
doesn't make sense to use both on a given page.
The use of these features is subject to policies that your wiki
community will need to develop. They should be used carefully until
such a policy is in place.
To activate the patrolling configuration,
1) File a request on http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ of type
"enhancement", component "site request". You may need to create a
BugZilla account to do this.
2) Title your request "Enable FlaggedRevs Patrolling Configuration on
(my project name)".
3) Post a link to your BugZilla request to your project's "Village
pump" and mailing list, if available.
If there are no objections on the BugZilla page, the request will be
considered valid after 7 days. (It may still take a while longer to
process it.)
== Custom Configurations ==
The FlaggedRevs extension is highly flexible in its configuration. We
are willing to accommodate custom requests. Since some configurations
of FlaggedRevs could be considered highly disruptive, the requirements
are somewhat higher.
1) Read about the configuration options at:

and experiment with the live demo at:
http://en.labs.wikimedia.org/
2) Create a page in the "Project:" namespace (e.g. "Wikipedia:",
"Wikibooks:") of your wiki community describing the configuration you

3) Create a BugZilla request as above, titled "Enable FlaggedRevs
custom configuration on (my project name)" pointing to the proposal
page you have created. Provide an English translation of all relevant
information if possible - or we may not be able to help you.
4) Post a link to your proposal and to the BugZilla request to the
various relevant channels of your wiki community, e.g. "village pump",
mailing list.
If there are no objections within 14 days, your request will be
considered valid. If there are objections, please try building
consensus. If necessary, you can also resort to a poll (a very large
majority, at least two thirds, is generally necessary).
Note that custom configurations will take longer to process, and might
sit in the technical support queue for several weeks.
Our developers will _only_ look at the information attached to the
BugZilla request, so please make sure that everything relevant is at
least linked from there.

The user interface of the FlaggedRevs extension needs to be translated
into as many languages as possible. The extension can be localized

There's a great new way to get your product known fast, very fast! Just have
it win one of the four Gold Awards presented at the first-ever COMPUTEX
TAIPEI design & innovation award 2008. Each four gold-winners will be
honored with trophies (custom designed for this contest by Proud Design) and
have the glory of taking the stage at the special press conference on June
2nd, just one day before COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2008. Best of all, each of the 17
prize winning entries (including the four Gold Award winners) are displayed
to tens of thousands of visitors at the NANGANG Exhibition Hall during
COMPUTEX TAIPEI.
The problem is that taking home Gold isn't that easy! For starters, there
were 139 products entries vying for just four prizes. And each had to be
critically reviewed by international experts in the following product
categories:

6. Optoelectronic Display Product and Digital Audio /Video
With COMPUTEX TAIPEI being an international platform for demonstrating
technological innovations and outstanding design this competition is a
natural addition to the show.
"We are happy to support COMPUTEX TAIPEI with our 'organized by iF'
services," states Ralph Wiegmann, managing director of iF, which is the key
backer of this contest. "We have set high standards for this design &
innovation award. Thanks to the hard work of the panels of judges, and their
critical and professional judgment, the overall conclusion is very positive
and convincible."
One of the international panelists, Christoph Böninger states that this
competition reflects the current state of the art in Taiwan. "The standard
of design-excellence has risen in the last years to an international level,"
stated Böninger. "Taiwanese companies are now competing well with
international companies in the IT sector."
"Having participated as a judge in several Taiwan awards, I was pleasantly
surprised with the overall quality of the COMPUTEX TAIPEI design &
innovation award 2008 entries," stated Kris Verstockt of Cre8 design studio
who is one of the panel. "Several companies sent in multiple entries and it
was evident that these organizations are focusing more than ever on brand
expression through consistent product quality and uniform brand imaging.
Equally interesting was the fact that not only the big players but also
smaller companies are placing more emphasis on product quality, innovation
and product design."
JURY CRITERIA
Key factors considered in products included the degree of innovation, design
quality, workmanship, choice of materials, environmental friendliness,
functionality, ergonomics, utility value, safety, universal design and brand
value/branding.

Each submitted item was fully inspected by each panelist who chose 17
winning entries. After that four of these short-listed winners were chosen
for Gold Awards. The panel of judges comprise of Christoph Böninger
(brains4design GmbH), Duck Hsieh (Duck Image Corporation), James Irvine
(James Irvine S.r.l.), Kris Verstockt (Cre8 design studio) and Roger Pin-Si
Lin (Nova Design Co., Ltd.).

OpenBook uses a classical design approach by taking special care of all
mechanical parts like the hinge which has wonderful details, thus gives the
laptop a strong and robust sense. The design shows that even in the fast
turning IT industry, not everything must be styled in a short living
"fashion-way"
The OpenBook is recognized the well thought-off, design-driven forms and use
of materials. The device stands out not just on its innovative values, but
also because of its execution of a universally accepted design standards.
There is a nice balance between the hinge part and main housing that is
further accentuated with the right choice of materials and colors. It also
helps that the open device creates an equally clean visual experience.

In the saturated picture-frame market it is difficult to stand out from the
crowd without taking away from the main function of the product, i.e.
picture viewing.
The UF735 Digital Picture Frame manages to do this by keeping the front of
the product clean and simple while strongly accentuating the back of the
device.
The front bezel uses an aluminum plate with speaker-web so no attention is
drawn away from picture viewing. The back uses a swivel and button
combination that generates a high-tech and high end feeling.
The Asus UF735 is a wonderful, almost poetic picture frame for showing
digital photos with music. The simple and easy to operate interface is self
explanatory and needs no manuals.

Dino Lite combines a minimalistic, no-nonsense design approach with exciting
technological innovation. Great human factors make this product a self
explanatory "tool" that shows it's technology and robustness very well.
The Dino-Lite Digital Microscope was awarded as the product portrays a nice
balance between innovation, ergonomics and use of materials.
A metal plated housing is complimented with a large metal scroll wheel,
positioned in the right area, which is as feasible as is accessible.
Combine a well thought-off device layout with multiple application
possibilities in educational, medical and several other fields of industry
and you have a winner.

"Minimize to the Max" is the concept of the "Swing Duo" by combining the
precision of minimal design with the touch of utilitarian ideology. The
design shows the exciting capacity of this flash drive by using the minimal
amount of plastic material.
The Swing Duo USB Flash Drive received extra recognition because the device
manages to be innovative while staying minimalist. The flash drive housing
is also its cover, the hinge provides tactile feedback and can accommodate a
strap. The unit has no loose parts that can be easily misplaced.

Deemed as one of the most successful international events at the 2008 Taipei
Computex show, DRAMeXchange yesterday held its annual conference at the
brand-new Nangang Exhibition Hall. Conference participants, ranging from
leading memory storage to professionals to numerous related industry
experts, came from more than 20 countries.
Three key analysts from the Industry Research Division of DRAMeXchange
discussed the opportunities and challenges of the DRAM and NAND Flash
sectors as well as the current market current trend of China's memory module
market:
Joyce Yang, Vice President of Industry Research Division, indicated that
amid the diminishing presence of the 8-inch fabs, slower expansion of the
12-inch fabs and DRAM makers' reducing capital spending by 37% (YoY), the
overall industry growth rate is expected to reach around 55% - which,
compared to last year's 93%, has substantially declined by 40%. As for the
development in the chip process technology, the mainstream production
process of DDR2 will shift from 70nm 8F2 to 65nm 6F2, and 5Xnm by the end of
this year. Such trend stems from the need to further lower production costs
in gaining a favorable edge in the intense market competition.
On the other hand, Jeff Chen, Senior Analyst of Industry Research noted that
when it comes to getting into the China DRAM module market, channel is the
determining factor, along with strong, resourceful local distributors.
China's market is desirable in the eyes of many major module makers with
stronger spot DRAM modules demand, which is caused by China's shipment ratio
of DT/PC is higher than other major markets. For module makers, the strength
of channel power and lower cost are the two important factors to be
successful in China. Nowadays, the DRAM module primary channels are mainly
in the hands of Chaozhounese in Shenzhen.
Wayne Chen, Director of Industry Research Division, pointed out that as the
infrastructure of global wireless broadband network (3.5-4G & WiMax)
develops, more growth opportunities for portable electronics will appear.
With the global launch of HDTV, the need for higher storage capacity will
subsequently increase. This increases the NAND Flash usage in electronic
storage devices and creates more business opportunities for storage
applications.
Separately, six guest speakers also shared their valuable industry
experience and professional viewpoint at the event
Qimonda: Up to 75% of power can be saved by the "right" memory & system
Peter Schaefer, Vice President for Product Line Server of Qimonda AG,
focused on how to achieve power saving and carbon reduction through its
Buried wordline process and chip miniaturization. The goal is to lower the
power usage and increase performance. Based on the power usage of global
PCs, Qimonda's products lowers the voltage from 18v to 1.55 v (a 20%
reduction in power consumption), and through the AMB's control, it can be
lowered by another 10%, thereby reducing the carbon consumption.
SanDisk: SSDs will consume 1/3 of the NAND Flash output in 2012
Doreet Oren, Director Product Marketing of SanDisk Israel, indicated that
SSDs will consume 1/3 of the NAND Flash output in 2012, which is far larger
than all other application products combined. This trend will also bring in
billions of dollars of business opportunities for SSD manufacturers. It is
expected that the storage capacity of SSDs can reach 256GB in 2010 and hence
emerge as the mainstream data storage device in the near future.
Silicon Motion: SSD won't become mainstream applications without using MLC
NAND
World's largest NAND flash controller provider, Silicon Motion Technology's
C.E.O., Wallace Kou, noted SLC cost is about 2X that of MLC chips with the
same density. SSD won't become the mainstream application if MLC NAND is not
used. Thus, development of SSD's MLC NAND Flash is a key factor for cost
reduction. However, MLC SSD faces major application problems and in order to
improve their inherent limitations, it is important to rely on the
controller to increase the speed, stability and the number of read/write
times. Currently, controller manufacturers use bad block management, error
correcting code and wear leveling to enhance the life of MLC chip in SSDs.
ASUSTek: 1 billion low-priced PCs with SSD storage in the market, and
possibly up to 5 billion units in 2011
Samson Hu, General Manager of EPC Business Unit of ASUSTek, indicated that
numerous industry professionals feel optimistic about the SSD application in
PC after ASUSTek launched its Eee PC during 4Q07, which used 4GB/8GB SSDs.
Major PC manufacturers also launched similar products during 2Q08 after the
success of ASUSTek's Eee PC launch. Currently, there are about 1 billion
low-priced PCs with SSD storage application in the market, and possibly up
to 5 billion units in 2011.
Hitachi GST: As storage capacity will continue to expand, reasonable price
advantage will create business opportunities for HDD makers
Mr. Robert Chu, Vice President of the Asia-Pacific region of Hitachi Global
Storage Technology, pointed out that the current applications of HDD in the
IT industry are for enterprises, NB PC and DTPC. For the consumer
electronics, there are home/personal data storage, DVR, MP3/PMP, game
machines, and automation equipment. HDD enjoys the advantage of featuring a
higher storage capacity, bit cost and performance. As capacity demand of new
applications increases, storage capacity will continue to expand. As a
result, the bigger storage capacity and reasonable price advantage will
create new business opportunities for HDD makers.
Seagate: HDD is seen as the leading device for explosion of storage in the
home
According to Seagate's Executive Director of Korea/Taiwan, Brian Wickman,
HDD manufactures focused on the exploding demand for enterprise HDD market
in the past few years. From now on, amid the arrival of the
Broadband/Internet era, HDD is seen as the leading device for the storage of
the enormous amount of information transferred through the network for the
consumer market. Wickman forecasted that scale of global storage will reach
374 Exabytes in 2012 with an average home storage of 185 Exabytes.
Meanwhile, Seagate will introduce its first SSD storage and 2T-byte hard
drive next year. The company's first SSD product will be targeted at
enterprises that need speedy storage and can afford to pay a premium price.
