Hi all, It is extremely unfortunate that some ( very few) of our dearest Malayalam Community members is trying to politicize every genuine & sincere action or gesture attempted on behalf of the Wikimedia India Chapter. Please remember that Wikimedia India Chapter is also a volunteer driven body of Wikimedia Community members. We don't get paid for our services/efforts and we contribute to the movement in India with our personal time and energies like any other community members, out of our passion and interests. Only difference is that we are not just interested in growing own language Wikimedia projects, but all the Wikimedia Projects of all languages that are relevant to India. Please note that Special Interest Groups(SIGs) are formed for community engagement and develop / help the related Wiki Communities. The Chapter Board cannot alone work and help 9 Wikimedia Projects in 20+ Indic language Projects. Some of the SIGs are very active , some are relatively less active. The Chapter runs ( for operational expenses) on donations from people and grants from the Wikimedia Foundation. Last year, our annual budget and earnings was around 3000Rs. Several things were run from the personal money of several individuals, which the outside world doesn't come to know. Regarding the Malayalam Conference grant, while we initially started discussions with Sujith and others unofficially, the requested amount was around 50,000 Rs. This was a time when we had less than 30K in our bank accounts ( funds from individual donations & membership fees). But in the spirit of earnestly supporting the Malayalam Community, some of the EC members were even willing to loan their own money to help fund the request for the time being. When the formal grant request was made on 20 March, it was initially 64,000 Rs only. Later this request was raised to around 94,000 Rs. There was several discussions between the organizers and some of the chapter EC members all through out. The EC was supposed to meet on 15 April 2012 to discuss this and several other things. I know that not many will understand and appreciate the effort we take to meet and conduct a 11 hr marathon meeting on a Sunday, which we could have otherwise spend with our precious family and friends. On the very day of the EC meeting, the grant request was raised to 2.45 lakh. This was a huge amount for us, considering that even the foundation grant had not reached the chapter bank accounts (there were many procedural delays other than signing of Grants agreement with the Foundation and several months of wrestling with the Government to get the FCRA clearance). In-spite of all these, the Chapter Executive Committee unanimously decided to earmark a generous amount of 1 lakh for the Malayalam WikiConference. Please note that this amount comes to approximately 1/6 of foundation grant, which we are expecting to receive . What ever conditions asked along with the grant approval are for statuary reasons. We are a non-profit society registered with the Government and several procedural regulations have to be followed. Whatever we do have to transparent and open. Other Communities can also ask why such a huge grant was approved for a single community event. We are also answerable to all those questions. Even for WikiConference 2011, such procedures were followed. We, as Wikimedia India Chapter, is trying to earnestly and genuinely help the Malayalam Community, like it wants to do for every Wiki Community in India. We humbly request to not to spread misunderstandings and also divide chapter members and the rest of the community members. Please don't spread rumours like "Chapter wants to take over the event". The event is run by the Malayalam Wikimedia Community. The chapter only intended to support it for covering some of its expenses through a grant. I am sure that the same people would have said that "Chapter is not helping" if it had disapproved the grant or even approved only a small amount.
