Much is down to the operator, but better cameras can take better pictures, especially in Low light conditions.

If you take David Gerard's advice and introduce yourself as from Wikipedia , any political party with an ounce of commonsense will usher you to the front and give you a position where you can take a good photo.

Why? Surely they are all open to being photographed? And why "serious
gear"? Just an iPhone would do?

I rarely take any sort of portrait photograph but the candidate are out
there so be seen (and heard).
