Wiki Loves Monuments 2017.

Before that, the world’s largest photo competition, Wiki Loves Monuments, takes place during the whole of September. Share your high quality pics of listed buildings and monuments to Wikimedia Commons and help preserve our cultural heritage online. After days out, weekend breaks and holidays at home & abroad, there will be gigabytes of pics taken in recent months and years. These could remain on your memory card or be shared to Commons and help illustrate Wikipedia for the benefit of all. Entry is free and the best pics will win a prize.

Aside from being great fun, Wiki Loves Monuments is a way of capturing a snapshot of our nation’s cultural heritage for future generations and documenting our country’s most important historic sites. See the rules and how to enter. The WikiShootMe  tool also helps identify places local to you requiring images.

The Wikimedia residency at Edinburgh University extends until 2019.

The ‘Wikipedia in the Classroom’ assignments from last year are all continuing in 2017/2018 and are being added to with workshops in three more disciplines - doubling our work in the curriculum. An article summarising the residency, which has now been extended until January 2019, has been published in the University of Edinburgh journal (p.25). There are also now 208 videos on the residency’s Media Hopper channel including playlists on ‘How to edit Wikipedia’, WikiCite 2017 and Wikimania 2017; how Internet Archive are working with Wikimedia to resolve link rot; Wikimedia 2030; how Wikidata supports the impact of GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) and the biocuration of genomic linked data; and a presentation by Assistant Principal, Melissa Highton, and myself on the work we have been doing here at the University of Edinburgh.

If you would like to know more or are interested in collaborating then feel free to email me at ewan.mcandrew@ed.ac.uk. The potential for the sharing of Open Knowledge and promoting better exposure of scholarly outputs is certainly worth exploring.

Best wishes,
