Thanks for the clarification.

I just want to say that I am against the idea of another editing competition since I still do not believe that it's the best way to retain editors.

Subject: Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Wikipedia Takes Nairobi

Thanks for posting this Steve,

First of all, apologies for the prolonged silence on this, I've been short on time.

So regarding funding, last time I spoke to Adrienne from Wikimedia France, she said they'd be willing to fund this but of-course we'll need to submit a budget for them to look at and I believe I mentioned this when I setup the Google doc so hope I'm clear this time, budget needs to be filled up.

An article writing competition as a follow-up should be great, when KWC happened, there were no Wikimedian's (as participants) involved but right now, we have Wikimedians so worst case scenario, we'll have new / improved articles, best case, more edits past the competition. During KWC, there was no follow-up on editing, we are here to do that now so hopefully, this will reignite article editing and it's my hope that wmke can sustain this past the competition.

Feedback also needed:
  • Venue for awards ceremony: suggestions so far - Bomb blast memorial park, Strathmore uni
  • Start date: suggestions - beginning of November, end of Noivember
  • Judges: I believe here's where Eric Latiff should come in handy, getting guys from media and photography industries in Kenya to judge would be great (NB: not solely ie, we'll help) so Isaac...
  • Focus groups: ie people we should target fro the challenge. I'm already in contact with a group of photographers

A suggestion put forward to sustain activity on WTN over a long period (more than a day) is to focus outreach on different regions (CBD, Westlands, Eastlands etc) as the competition goes along, thoughts on this are welcome.

Updates:
  • In-touch with Isla Haddow, project manager for WikiAfrica who'll be assisting in getting word out to various cultural institutions in Africa, plan to touch base with her after receiving some feedback here. Iolanda (from Wikimedia Italy) has also been helpful here.
  • Google is interested in WTN as per our last meetup when Asaf was around, just pinged Angela (from Google) with updates on this and as agreed from our (wmke) chats, we won't work on their schedule so as to avoid a similar situation with the ICT Board
  • As for ICT Board, I can only confirm their presence during the awards ceremony and maybe some media attention.

cheers,
Alex

yes, you're absolutely right. Even that guy from Capital (I've forgotten his name) told us that a one-day competition might not be the best way to go. Wiki Loves Monuments, for instance ran through the month of September and had over 160,000+ photo uploads. Of course I do not anticipate that we'll get that magnitude of uploads if we run this competition for a month (since in WLM, around 20 countries participated), but it was just worth comparing a one-day competition to a one-month competition.

I personally did not contribute to the Google Doc page regarding WTN because Alex told me that Wikimedia France had agreed to fund this project. I think we need proper clarification (from Alex) onto who's funding what, because there seems to be a mis-communication here.

I'm the one who suggested the Wikimania prize since it could be easily arranged for as compared to looking for a sponsor/grant, etc. And when I suggested this prize, I did not have the one-day competition in mind.

Erm, a writing competition is quite controversial and didn't prove to retain editors in the Kiswahili Wikipedia Challenge. What makes you think it will, this time round?
