Boy, I am famous after that ill-timed RfA!
Its a good idea that Akash ji has expressed.
Well, I think that we can write a letter to Central Government or State Governments explaining them about the situation and requesting them to make the move.
I think it would be good idea for the guys from Telegu wikipedia (or anyone for that matter) can write to Andhra Pradesh Goverment to start with as we already have a lot of information about Andhra Pradesh online (and the Telegu wikipedia guys have really used it real well). The Government of AP might be more likely to know the values of GDFL with all those experience online.

Eukesh

Good to see so many people are part of this mailing list. It was good to hear from Eukesh. I had only come across him on his not so good RfA at enwiki :). I really admire the work he has done for the coverage of Nepal and related articles at the English Wikipedia.

Today's signpost [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2007-06-04/Dutch_government] has an article about the Dutch government releasing photos of all cabinet members under GFDL. This is a landmark move by any government. I hope all the governments including Government of India follows suit soon. I had once uploaded hundreds of photos of our MPs, but they all got deleted under as they did not meet our strict non-free image guidelines.

Is it possible that the Indian government would even consider any petition like this? Any suggestions on how we can also go about petitioning our central and state governments to start thinking about releasing photos under GFDL or PD. Creative-commons has an India chapter now. Could we co-ordinate with them to start putting pressure on our government?
