Dear Northern fellows,
During a small meet-up / catch-up on Friday at Wikimedia Summit, it was
confirmed:
1. Wikimania will happen in Stockholm in August this year :)
2. There will be Nordic meet-up in Tartu in October this year.
Also, please find the group photo attached. I will upload it to Commons in
24 hours, if there will be no objections.
It was great catching up with all of you!

Hello folks,
Wikimedia Norge are now launching the *Uralic language contest 2019*
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Uralic_language_contest_…>
on Meta. 2019 is UNESCO's International Year of Indigenous Languages
(IYIL), and we have been recognized as a *Civil Society Partner* for this
year. This contest is one of several events we are planning to organize in
2019 in conjunction with IYIL. The contest is aimed at increasing content
about indigenous Uralic languages and the people who speak them, and
everyone is welcome to join it.
I would love your help in spreading the message about this contest to your
local communities, and with translating
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Translate?group=agg-Uralic_language…>
the contest pages into your languages.

Hello all,
To follow up from the meeting I have started a discussion about the
abbrevation for Wikimedia Northern Europe on Meta. The discussion is
located at [1].
Like I outlined there, I suggest a period of twe weeks to make suggestions
about the abbreviation, and one week afterwards for a vote to decide what
should be used.

Hello everyone!
Apologies for the low radio chatter on the WMNE Meta page. I've been quite
busy with my studies.
Shortly after the meeting I started setting up the WMNE portal on Meta.
It's split into four parts.
- The "front page", located at "Wikimedia Northern Europe", is a general
information page for anyone interested.
- The forum, located at "Wikimedia Northern Europe Forum", is the place for
communication about various things, currently it's hosting a discussion on
the abbreviation for Wikimedia Northern Europe which could use some more
input.
- The repository, located at "Wikimedia Northern Europe/Repository" is
meant as a centralized place to find the various groups & initiatives going
on in the Northern Europe region, I've listed some of the working groups
based on what I could find in the meeting documentation, but I know it
isn't complete, so please add your initiative if you don't see it, and
please add a contact if applicable to the existing ones.
- The workspace, located at "Wikimedia Northern Europe/Workspace" is a
place to work on things that don't fit on specific Wikimedia Projects, or
as a place to store documentation etc.
Again, apologies for the delay, I'd suggest watch-listing the various pages
(the forum in particular) to receive reminders when new posts are made.
All the best,
Matthias / WMDK
Hello all!
At WMSE we have put together a blog post in English to announce the start
of the collaboration in our region and outcomes from WikiNEM and what the
next steps are
https://wikimediasverige.wordpress.com/2018/11/06/the-regional-collaboratio….
A link to Karens report is also included and these two resources make good
communications to share (translate, copy, discuss) with local communities,
we think.
I've also added a section for reports on the Documentation page for the
Stockholm meeting,
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Northern_Europe_Meeting_2018/Docu…
where you can list blog posts or messages you have shared about the
meeting.
Best,
Sara

Hi,
As promised at WikiNEM, here is the list of links to different education
resources it would be useful for you people working with education to know
about. (Sara, if you have something to add, the please do!):
- The education email list can be found here.
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/education> In this list you
also get info about when The education team at WMF has online office hours,
if you need to discuss education related work.
- Info about the Wikipedia & Education User Group can be found here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_%26_Education_User_Group>. All
of you education workers should become members!
- The Program and Events Dashboard, <https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/>
that is usefull for planning and tracking editing events and trainings.
- Also, a lot of resources can be found at the Wiki Education home page
<https://wikiedu.org/>.
We also talked about creating a list of who works on education our
organizations. Meta is perhaps the best place for this list?

Hi everyone,
Two weeks ago this evening, we were gathered in a circle in Stockholm to
kick off the first ever WikiNEM meeting.
Now, I present you with my thoughts - as promised - in an article with my
reflections on our weekend together.
Thanks to Sara Mörtsell for her great help in guiding me and providing a
home for this. Thanks to Matthias Smed Larsen for moral support and the alt
text tip. :)
Sara will share it with WMF next week, so there should be a blog post from
them at some point.
This is the link, but it is not linked anywhere else just yet.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Northern_Europe_Meeting_2018/Story
You can take this and use it for inspiration for writing an article in your
language.
On behalf of Sara, I'd like to remind everyone to share their photos - if
they want to - by adding them on Commons in "Category:Wikimedia Northern
Europe Meeting 2018". We can make subcategories later. If you all post your
photos now, Sara won't have to send out a mail requesting the photos. :)
Have a great weekend!
Regards, Karen "twdk"
There was this weird idea, that we should use this Nordic mailing list bit
more often. So I'll leave some comments on the following topics: lists
about vital articles, first (?) joint GLAM project, science photography
competition, and next Nordic meeting.
*Vital articles about Nordic countries*
* Eesti1000: https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikipeedia:Eesti_1000
* it still needs some fixes (like some articles might be replaced), but it
is mostly ready
* here you might see the first comparison of wikis on how well do
they cover Estonian topics:
https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikipeedia:Eesti_1000/Tabel (it was assembled
on a hurry on Sunday to have something to show so this is just a draft
version, but you can get some general idea on how well your wiki is
covering the Estonian topics)
* you are all welcomed to assemble similar lists about your countries.
*GLAM project*
* During the first half of 2019, there should be formed a set of virtual
exhibitions as part of a joint GLAM project. That is: we are collecting
information about artworks that our museums have about other Nordic
countries.
* At a moment the people involved are Astrid (Norway), Axel (Sweden),
Edgars (Latvia), Ivo & Merli (Estonia), Minna (Finland), Salvor (Iceland),
and Steen (Denmark). If someone wants to learn more about it or join the
project, then please contact the relevant people.
*Science photo competition*
* http://www.wikisciencecompetition.org/
* Next competition is in November 2019 (i.e. uploading images in November,
selecting the local winners in December and selecting the international
winners in January-February)
* It is also possible to participate as a goup of countries.
*Next Nordic wikimeetup*
* Likely to take place in Tartu, Estonia

P.S: There were some questions about this translation tool named Minority
Translate. It is available here: http://translate.keeleleek.ee
I announce that my boat will leave Stockholm on Sunday at 16.30 and I have
to be at the boat by 16.00. So I will depart the venue at about 15.30.
thanks
