Shagnik, from time to time, you will find me raise issues on English
Wikipedia's WikiProject India, as part of my role as volunteer coordinator.
This post was on the topics listed on the heading.
Regarding your query, why mention the popular pages, my answer is as
follows:
When we work, we may like to choose that our limited quantity of editing
capacity is used effectively. Based on how you think & feel about this, you
may decide to edit specifically on some page or topic.
For example, if you love cricket, you may feel editing cricket is the most
worthwhile way to spend your time.
If you feel that we should do good to society, one may like to work on
socially relevant articles or on initiatives such as Offline Wikipedia for
Indian Schools.
Similarly, if one says, "what are the pages most sought after by people?",
then working on these articles may be considered as the most valuable
contribution of all as lakhs of people view these articles each month.
Examining this issue gives us insights onto what information people seek
and what they need. We can now make informed choices and device strategies.
You can now decide based on this view of mine as to how you feel you should
spend your time and which articles you would like to edit.
Warm regards,
Ashwin Baindur

What is the point of this pupularity of pages issue?
Surely there would be
thousands of children who will access Mohandas Gandhi for their history
assignments and many fans of Shahrukh Khan to more about the hero. Are we
trying to promote some pages? Or is this some kind of recruitment campaign
or something?

2010. Remarks, including proposing the revival of Indian Cinema Task Force
The first task of a WikiProject should always be that the relevant
articles are all brought under the gambit of the task force and assessed. I
suggest that this be the focus for at the least the first month or even the
first quarter.
The list articles are very useful here in the case of the films of
Bollywood. Those who are working on the non-Bollywood cinema should ensure
that the entry falls into a language group cinema clearly by means of a
category.
For actors, directors, cinematographers etc, books or list articles can be
sought for discovery.

I'm so sorry for late reply. I being a one of the coordinator of
WikiProject Film, would like to know in what way I can help you all. I will
be happy to do that. :)
Can you guys just let me know the tasks that require my attention. It will
also be great if any one lend me a helping hand at-least in the beginning.
Thank you!

A chance find of this page reveals the most popular Wikipedia pages for
December 2010 :
http://stats.grok.se/en/top
Of the top 1000 (including functional pages not containing information)
WikiProject India had six :
#39 [[India]] (Featured article, Top Importance)
# 336 [[Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi]] (B Class, Top Importance ) (History
& Politics TFs)
#375 [[Indian classical dance]] (Start class, High Importance)
#542 [[Shahrukh Khan]] (B Class, Mid Importance ) (Delhi, Cinema &
Television TFs)
#648 [[Bollywood films of 2010]] (List Class, Mid Importance) (Cinema TF)
#757 [[Sachin Tendulkar]] (B Class, High Importance ) (Maharashtra &
Mumbai TFs)
#765 [[Katrina Kaif]] (C Class, Low Importance) (Cinema TF)
I have excluded [[Nicki Minaj]] and [[Freddie Mercury]] from this list. It
takes a real stretch of imagination to add [[Nicki Minaj]] to the
WikiProject. Freddie Mercury is already under the WikiProject. I think that
there are people other than Indians enough to bother about these two
articles.
A few remarks:
* Where can one find the top 100 articles in term of page views? It can be
argued that these are the most valuable real estate we have. It would be
very useful to be able to know and improve these articles.
* Can any one point us to an existing tool for this?
* Alternatively, can any one set up a tool page for this.
* For some reason [[Indian classical dance]] is very valuable. We really
need to bring it upto B Class standards at the earliest. After [[Dance in
India]]. thi should be the next project for all editors interested in song
& dance.
* The analogue of [[Bollywood films of 2010]] is [[Bollywood films of
2012]]. This years list has already been viewed 2,44,217 times in the last
30 days.
*We need to revive Task Force Indian Cinema. Bollywood & associated film
industries are not only extremely popular topics to our people, but also to
our diaspora. Even more importantly, talking like a soldier, Indian Cinema
is one of the most powerful mechanisms of soft power extended by our
nation. Our adversaries would pay billions of dollars to be able to get that
kind of influence. No question, Indian Cinema on English Wikipedia needs
loads of attention.
* Articles on major stars will always be high on India page-view lists and
probably draw more page views than the top ten articles on most lists.
These need to be developed well for that reason.
* May I request someone interested in Bollywood to please recruit new
users who are already editing Indian cinema articles; I am sure there are
at least a hundred newbies out there if not more and entice them to
WikiProject Indian Cinema?
* User:Karthikndr is the coordinator there and we have many capable
participants including admins such as Utcursch, Sir Nick, & Gurubrahma.
* We need a monthly report on this list & on India Noticeboard on the
activity in Indian Cinema to interest us & keep us involved. Karthik Nadar,
can you please oblige?
Note: Task Force Indian Cinema is actually the Indian Cinema Task Force
for WikiProject Films and is a joint task force alongwith WikiProject India.

AshLin
