*Africa-based campaign coordinator*
*Whose Knowledge? is seeking a campaign coordinator to co-lead the
#VisibleWikiWomen global campaign and support Africa based partners to add
images of notable women to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.*
*More about us:*
Whose Knowledge?
<https://whoseknowledge.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dc18da4138d7c6ac…>
is a global campaign to center the knowledge of marginalized communities
(the majority of the world) on the internet. Most public knowledge online
has so far been written by white men from Europe and North America. To
address this, we work particularly with women, people of color, LGBTQI
communities, indigenous peoples and Global South communities to build and
represent more of all of our own knowledge online.
*The Project:*
Women’s knowledge and contributions to the world are invisible in so many
ways. When we look at women’s invisibility online, Wikipedia is a good
proxy to explain why this is such a critical issue. Less than a fourth of
Wikipedia biographies represent women. Many biographies of notable women
don’t exist or are incomplete.
More often than not, women biographies don’t have images. We estimate that
less than 20% of Wikipedia articles of important women have pictures. And,
when women’s faces are missing from Wikipedia, that invisibility spreads. Half
a billion people read
<https://whoseknowledge.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dc18da4138d7c6ac…>
Wikipedia every month, and it is the 5th most visited website
<https://whoseknowledge.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dc18da4138d7c6ac…>
in the world, so gaps in Wikipedia have a big impact on the broader
internet.
Whose Knowledge?, in partnership with the Wikimedia movement, feminist and
women’s organizations, GLAM institutions and allies around the world, have
hosted the #VisibleWikiWomen campaign every year from March to May since
2018, to add more images of women to Wikipedia and the broader internet. So
far over 15,000 images have been used across Wikipedia and the different
Wikimedia projects as a result of this campaign. However, Wikipedia (and
the broader internet) are still missing many images of important and
influential women, especially black, brown, indigenous and trans women.
A special focus is what we call #womenofcolors, our targeted effort to
increase the number of images of influential black, brown, indigenous and
trans women, especially from the Global South that are uploaded to
Wikipedia as part of the #VisibleWikiWomen campaign.
*Role:*
A regional coordinator who will co-manage the campaign globally with our
existing coordinator based in Latin America and focus on developing new
connections and partnerships in Africa, helping make the #VisibleWikiWomen
2021 campaign a success!
This is a paid, part-time contractor role, 10-20 hours per week, for 4
months (February - May).
*Responsibilities:*
- Act as a first point of contact for local partners and selected global
partners
- Coordinate and support communications, media and publicity
- Keep website up to date, help showcase stories and successes along the
way
- Facilitate communications with Wikimedians, partners and allies
- Prepare materials, resources, and toolkits for partners
- Support participants on Commons and Wikipedia as images are uploaded
- Analyse the effort after completion, and communicate outcomes and
learning to partners and broader audiences
*Our ideal candidate has:*
- Experience with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons
- Experience facilitating international groups or networks, coordinating
volunteers, etc
- Ability to clearly communicate virtually
- Previously worked in multicultural/multilingual online spaces
- Proficiency in English. Other language skills relevant in the African
context would be highly desirable
- Interest and experience in working with visual materials (photographs,
art work, and other visual forms)
- Initiative to start things, move projects forward, and manage tasks
independently
- A feminist, anti-colonial perspective
*Candidates must be from and reside in the African continent!*
To apply, please send an email with Subject: *#VisibleWikiWomen Coordinator
Africa* to *visiblewikiwomenATwhoseknowledgeDOTorg*, Application deadline
is *January 25th. 2021*. Include your CV and tell us why you're interested
and a good match for this role.
*WHOSE KNOWLEDGE?*
Is a global campaign working to create, collect and curate knowledge from
and with marginalised communities, so that the internet we build and defend
is ultimately an internet of, for and by all.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] New online learning courses on Building Partnerships
and Identifying and Addressing Harassment
To: <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello all,
The Community Development
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development> team at the
Wikimedia Foundation is launching the WikiLearn (Online Learning Pilot)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn>, a
capacity-building project. This project will deliver two courses over an
8-week period that will begin on February 1, 2021. Courses are free to take
part in and will be hosted on Moodle <https://moodle.com/>. During this
pilot project, each course will be taught, and assignments are to be
prepared, in English. At the end of the pilot, we will be making course
materials available for anyone interested in self-study, and for
translation.
The two courses we will be launching on February 1, 2021, are:
1.
Identifying and Addressing Harassment
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn/Identifying…>:
This course will focus on developing skills that will help volunteers
respond to on- and off-wiki harassment.
-
This course will combine scheduled sessions and independent study.
The weekly commitment of this course is 2-3 hours per week.
-
Target Audience: Volunteers with administrator or other advanced user
rights.
1.
Partnership Building:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Development/WikiLearn/Partnership…>
This
intensive course will provide an in-depth curriculum on how to develop
meaningful programmatic and organizational partnerships within the movement
and with external partners.
-
This course will consist of scheduled sessions and individual
assignments with a weekly total commitment of up to 6 hours.
-
Target Audience: Volunteers with intermediate-level experience
contributing to Wikimedia projects and beginner-level experience with
building partners with Non-Wikimedia groups and organizations.
To ensure our small team can provide each learner individual support, we
are limiting each course in this pilot to 40 participants. We ask that all
interested applicants commit to attending weekly for the full course.
All efforts will be made to ensure that scheduled sessions are time-zone
friendly to the greatest number of enrolled participants. However, with the
wide distribution of volunteers, that may not always be possible.
Key Dates:
-
Applications open Today (December 1, 2020) and will close on January 14,
2021.
-
Successful applicants will be notified on January 18, 2021.
-
The first session for each course will be held on February 1, 2021.
To Take Part in the Online Learning Pilot:
To participate in the Partnership Building online course, fill out this
application form

Subject: [All-affiliates] Global Conversations Dec. 5+6 - registration
information
To: <affiliates(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <all-affiliates(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi everyone,
Close to 250 people participated in virtual Global Conversations that took
place on November 21 and 22. The discussion continues on December 5 and 6
and we warmly invite you to take part. Registration is open until December
4. [1]
What happened already
Nearly 50 communities and affiliates shared their priorities in advance and
can continue to do so. [2] Based on those priorities, the first set of
events on Nov. 21+22 took discussions further by asking Wikimedians from
around the world which of the 45 Movement Strategy initiatives are most
important to globally coordinate and start implementing in 2021. For some
of the initiatives, implementation means further discussions and scoping.
Take a look at the results. [3] What do you think about the priorities?
What is missing? What would make you want to play an active role in
implementation?
Coordination will vary from one initiative to another. Some can be
implemented on their own, some will involve diverse communities and
affiliates of different sizes working together, and others may require
support from the Wikimedia Foundation.
What happens next
During the next set of discussions on December 5 and 6, we will focus on
the top global priorities and start discussing what implementation can
actually look like. What are the steps needed to put Strategy into action?
Everyone’s invited to help enrich these conversations. Since implementation
will be different from one context to another, we need as many voices as
possible included to create a movement-wide implementation plan.
Based on the feedback, we would like to continue the great momentum of the
first set of events and will provide social opportunities for Wikimedians
to connect. We will also provide space to hold short lightning talks [4] on
how to implement certain initiatives. If you have ideas, please share them
with others.
If you are unable to attend, we will share the results and raw data on Meta
so we can still benefit from your input.
What is provided
As for the first set of events, we will provide live interpretation in
Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Russian, and Spanish. In the
registration form, please let us know if you require language support as
well as internet data package upgrade or childcare for the duration of the
event.
Familiarize yourself with the initiatives already prioritized, register
early, and continue the conversation on December 5 and 6. See you there.
On behalf of the Support Team,
Kaarel

list <1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello Librarians and library lovers,
>From January 15th to February 5th 2021 we will be joining together once
again to continue providing reliable and factual information to the world
through Wikipedia. You can participate in #1Lib1Ref by simply adding a
citation to Wikipedia's content to improve the quality and reliability for
the millions of users of the platform!
Since we are celebrating the “human” part of the Wikimedia movement for
Wikipedia 20: we are focused this year on how every single human (librarian
or archivist, reference professional, and scholar) can add one more
reference to Wikipedia. This year has highlighted how important Wikipedia’s
citations are for access to reliable and unbiased information. The
#1lib1ref campaign is a great way to strengthen Wikimedia community
relationships with the library, information and research professionals who
create that knowledge and share it with the world.
How can you engage?
We invite you to engage in three ways:
-
Make an edit - Participate globally and virtually by adding citations to
Wikipedia.[1]
-
Organise - Lead a community activity or event in your library, country
or region.[2]
-
Amplify - Share and just keep sharing the campaign within your networks
and help us reach out to library and research communities around the
world.[3]
In light of the pandemic, we strongly encourage virtual activities and
advise everyone to follow the WHO health guidelines.[4] If restrictions
have been lifted in your country and are considering organising in-person
events, kindly follow the Wikimedia COVID risk assessment for events.[5]
Ensure all your contributions are recorded by using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag
in your edit summary. This is very important for us to monitor the reach
and success of the initiative.
Please tell your library, researcher and knowledge-loving friends about
#1Lib1Ref in January. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more
reliable!
You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Libraries (
libraries(a)lists.wikimedia.org), and 1Lib1Ref (1lib1ref(a)lists.wikimedia.org)
mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia + Libraries User Group.[6]

FYI
Hi everyone,
We have exciting news to share about Movement Strategy.
We are inviting communities and affiliates to host virtual workshops in
September and October to discuss what priorities from the Movement Strategy
recommendations matter most to them for implementation in 2021 [1].
Over the past two years, the Wikimedia movement has come together to create
the recommendations [2]. There are 10 recommendations and close to 50
recommended changes and actions or initiatives [3]. Not everything can be
implemented at once. We need to prioritize what ideas matter where and to
whom to create a movement-wide implementation plan.
In July and August, a diverse group of 18 Wikimedians [4] - nominated by
their peers and communities - came together to design the way for
co-creating an implementation plan for Strategy [5]. Many thanks to
community members who further enriched these discussions and helped us
improve the plan.
*== Overview of the transition to implementation ==*
The goal is to create an 18-month implementation plan presenting
prioritized and sequenced initiatives that we will start working on first.
This implementation plan will include flow and timeline for key actions as
well as responsibilities and financing needs. This is the first step
together in implementing our 10-year strategy. It will help us put the
foundations in place that we’ll build on together, and make sure we have
the people, resources, and structures we need to be successful.
To get to this plan, we need to have discussions at the local level and in
our communities regarding priorities and energy for implementation. There
is also the need for thematic discussions and movement-wide alignment, for
which events will be convened in late October and November. Afterwards,
there will be local and regional follow-up events to discuss decisions,
raise awareness, and create clarity for the next steps to put the
implementation plan into action in 2021.
For more information please consult the one-page overview for transition
events [6].
*== Getting started - prioritization workshops ==*
We will start with the community and affiliate-led preparation and
prioritization. The Movement Strategy recommends local communities have
opportunities to shape decisions directly, and the Design Group took this
into account in their planning. These events are meant to be light and will
highlight priorities for implementation that matter locally, regionally,
and thematically.
We invite communities and affiliates to host virtual events to determine
their priorities for implementation. The Support Team will provide guidance
for the events as well as a reporting template to complete. Facilitation
and documentation - and depending on context, translation and
interpretation - are required to ensure everyone is heard, people feel safe
and welcomed to contribute, and relevant information is captured. To get us
started, some regional, language and thematic events have been suggested by
the Design Group, and we would love to see more! [7]
The spirit of implementation is one of collaboration and experimentation.
We encourage project and online communities to see what ideas in the
recommendations they can experiment with to address knowledge equity and
knowledge as a service and to reach our strategic direction [8].
For more information please consult this one-page overview of
prioritization events [1].
*== For affiliates ==*
Affiliates can host the prioritization workshops in September and October
as part of their annual planning process for 2021. Whether it is to work on
local skill development, addressing content gaps, or research and
innovation, there is a lot to choose from and prioritize for your context.
Beyond addressing local needs, keep in mind regional collaborations,
working with partners, and getting involved in global discussions with the
movement in November and for implementation in 2021.
Facilitation, documentation, and translation of information are required
for these workshops and discussions. Funds can be reallocated from existing
budgets if unrestricted or from cancelled in-person events for 2020. Please
contact your grants officer.
== The next steps: ==
-
September and October 2020: Think local and regional. Discuss with your
community your priorities for implementation in 2021.
-
November: Let’s talk global. Cross-cutting thematic discussions and
global events will bring us together to plan the way forward.
-
There will be concurrent on-wiki engagement and options for asynchronous
participation
-
December: An implementation plan for the first 18 months of
implementation will be co-created based on the overlap of priorities.
-
January 2021: The implementation plan will be used to globally
coordinate some aspects of implementation while at the same time, local and
regional experiments can unfold
For now, indicate on our talk page if you will be hosting a prioritization
event in September and October [9]. We will be sharing out the reporting
template and guidance for the events very soon. Please add us to your
watchlist [10]. You can also send us an email at <strategy2030(a)wikimedia.org>
with your interest or if you have any questions or comments.
We are excited to be kicking off the implementation process with you and
look forward to lively discussions.
On behalf of the Support Team,
Kaarel

FYI official release below.
Dear Wikimedians,
Join me to welcome the EduWIki Outreach Collaborators[1], we are joined by
a group of Wikimedia volunteers from various parts of the world. This
group brings expertise in working with different communities,
projects, and together they will support education leaders and other
stakeholders in our movement with better networking and communication
practices for growth on Outreach Wikimedia and associated platforms.
While we received many applications for different roles, we are still
looking for female Wikimedians to join for the role of Outreach Wiki
Experts. The application for it is still open![2] You can find more
details about it on the Outreach Wiki page[3].
Best!
Sailesh
