We've discussed hosting WikiConference USA in 2016, but someone using an IP went a step further and added Seattle to the list of potential bidders for Wikimania 2016. I understand how scaling up makes sense, especially if we have strong U.W. support and are able to hire an event planner, but the main reason I have not suggested scaling up the event is that we are a young group and we need to grow in a sustainable way; Wikimania is a very large event that may distract us from the kinds of work we have already planned to pursue like forming local partnerships, so I feel that Wikimania would be a more appropriate event for us to host in 2017 or 2018 when we have a firmer foundation and perhaps more numerous local Wikimedians and partners who will assist with coordinating the event. Thoughts? I would love to see the conference in Seattle, but only when the time is right. We should not take on this project until we have the stability and capacity to do so. I have been adamant about this, especially when east coast Wikimedians suggest we should host. The truth is, we are not as organized... YET! There is certainly no harm in entertaining the idea, but I think it is in our best interest in grow slowly and smartly rather than bite off more than we can chew.
