Hi all,

I thought I’d gather a bit of a summary of relevant info from this year’s Wikimania – feel free to reply all with anything I’ve missed!

Wikimedians of the year

Huge congratulations to Alaa Najjar & Netha Hussain (both involved with WikiJMed)! Alaa was awarded Wikimedian of the Year for his work on medical topics in Arabic Wikipedia, particularly COVID-19. Netha was awarded the honourable mention for her work on COVID-19 and vaccine safety information across Wikimedia.

WikiJournal unconference session

Andrew Leung and I gave a short talk followed by some discussion sessions. Sadly only people who’d registered for Wikimania ahead of time could attend, but we had some good ideas raised by attendees, and there was positive feedback. People commented on the potential to raise the profile of Wikimedia projects within academic circles, and the need to eventually re-raise different WikiJournal article types over at WP:RS (i.e. citing within Wikipedia: original research articles vs articles turned into WP pages vs articles submitted from WP articles). It was also suggested to put together a risk management and mitigation matrix to send to the WMF board of trustees as part of re-engaging them in considering a sister project.

A selection of talks that may be of interest:

All the best,

Thomas
