I think it would be a good idea to use DOI's for all WikiJournals and to make the grant application for WikiJournal as a whole. However, since we already have a non-profit registered, I do not see the significance of creating another one at the one; the present one (WJM) should suffice. I would like to disagree with Gwinyai's apprehension that a centralised process might slow down creativity. I feel centralisation is very essential. Thanks Thomas for the inputs about PLOS. I would back up your view regarding the DOI code system you have suggested.

In terms of separate finances. The grant could be a joint application to reduce repetition, but then the requested funds explicitly dedicated to each journal (with the exception of the unified crossref account).

Also, a correction to my DOI comment: Never mind about the number prefix. I just realised that the prefix referrs to the publishing house, and the suffix is both journal and paper. e.g:
PLOS Biology = 10.1371/journal.pbio.XXXXXX
PLOS medicine = 10.1371/journal.pmed.XXXXXXX

So I propose we would do something like:
WikiJMed = 10.15347/wjm/2017.XXX
WikiJSci = 10.15347/wjs/2017.XXX
WikiJHum = 10.15347/wjh/2017.XXX

All the best,
Thomas

Thanks Mikael and Thomas,

In my view, each journal should be as independent as possible because I think folks in each specialised field are best able to know the relative importance of expenditure on certain things. A centralised process might slow down creativity. I favour a more decentralised process.

I agree about domain name registration. What became of the trademark application/issue?

Kindest regards,
Gwinyai

Excellent news about the flexibility of our existing crossref membership. Does that include being able to get a different journal ID prefix? Currently WikiJMed uses DOI:10.15347/XXXXXX for its articles. It'd be ideal if other WikiJournals had their own ID prefixes.

It may also be worth thinking about domain registrations such as WikiJSci.org and WikiJHum.org etc.

Thanks again for organising the financial side of things. I'm happy to help out writing the rapid grant application when you start it.

All the best,
Thomas

Hi WikiJournal participants,

I've discovered that the Crossref membership of WikiJournal of Medicine can actually be used to assign DOI codes to articles of multiple journals. For example, we can create DOI codes for the articles in WikiJournal of Science. If we want, we can assign it to the the articles of issue 0, or perhaps we want to wait until a peer review system is in place.

This feature changes my mind regarding future financing of WikiJournal. Since the Crossref membership is the main cost of our funding by rapid grants, I think it would be better to apply on the behalf of the entire WikiJournal project instead of for WikiJournal of Medicine.

It's time to start preparing the grant for next year's expenses, so in any case I will now go ahead and register WikiJournal as a non-profit organization in Sweden, so that we can apply for a rapid grant as such an organization. I can take the treasurer position in the grant application, but feel free to nominate yourself of someone else too for it.

Best regards,

Mikael
